Following on last week's announcement that 'Lust, Caution' is ineligible to be Taiwan's nominee for the 'Best Foreign Language Film' at the Oscar Awards, now news that 'Lust, Caution' is also ineligible for the Hong Kong Film Awards. According to Edko films, the HK based investor for the movie, the film failed to meet the criterion that the film needs a combination of HK director, HK film company or at least 8 key staff positions to be HK residents. Award winning director Ang Lee is from Taiwan and only the lead Tony Leung is from Hong Kong.
These types of awards consideration problems are a growing issue as more and more Chinese language films are the result of cross productions between several regions.
'Lust, Caution' will still be eligible for the HK Film Awards' 'Best Asian Picture' category and also eligible for Taiwan's 'Golden Horse' awards, which are open to all Chinese language films.
