Moon Represents My Heart

Been listening to one of my favorite Chinese songs. "Moon Represents My Heart" by Teresa Teng. It was also one of my father's favorite song. He was a drummer back in Hong Kong. When we came to the US he continued playing with a small Chinatown band, you might have heard him back in the 80's playing at one of the Chinese Association banquets. This is before Karaoke became popular. I use to hang out with him when they rehearsed and they played Teresa's songs all the time. I was a Tong Yun Faou groupie. 

I had forgotten about the song after my dad stopped playing in the band…. until our wedding day.  As some of you may know I use to practice martial arts. My Si Suk once said "I'll bring 8 lion heads when you get married… someday" . Well I gave him a call right after I was engaged. Fast forward to my wedding banquet…. Lion dance was awesome (though Si Suk was over an hour late)… then he introduced one of his lion dancer… a petite teenage girl… got on the mic and sang my favorite song. Yes… I burst into tears… how would she know this is my favorite song…  how would she know my father was no longer with us to share in my most special day.  She didn't but she choose the perfect song.

Now I have the joy of sharing this song with my daughter. I played it a few nights ago for her and told her this is my and her gong gong's favorite song. She's been requesting the song and asked to put it on repeat.

She never got to meet my dad… but now she will think of her gong gong when she hears the song… just as I do.
