Another thing that disturbed me from mommies meeting on last Friday is - they strongly suggested me to send Amelie to a learning centre for taking summer courses, cos one of the girl who is only 4 years old, and she can count the numbers up to a thousand Wow, that really surprise me, cos Amelie is still struggling on #1-9.  So I went to the learning centre with them after coffee.  It's a learning centre that offer courses for children such as drawing, craft, piano......, and what they said to learn Math. (they have a special name of it, but I have no idea what it is, cos I don't really understand simplified Chinese).  Anyway, I'm kind of confused of the math course, really no idea what it is, but other mommies said "it's good, it's good....".  I think Amelie will be more interested in drawing, but she's so small, I'm afraid if she learns the "rules" of painting so soon, will restrict her creativity, but of course, other mommies and the teacher said NONONO, children can draw more prettier.......

Well, I came home, and SKYPE my E and told him about the courses, my E objected to send Amelie there (although, only a few students there, some of them can be one by one with the teacher).  He thinks she's too young, no need to push her so soon.  So I asked Amelie if she wants to go to that school to learn numbers (I really don't know what the course is ), she said NO; to learn drawing?  She thought for a minute, and said, "No, I just want to draw at home"; OK. end of story.

I watched the HK TV some weeks ago, saying HK parents send their children to take lessons during summer, some of them even up to 8 courses in one summer - English, piano, violin, ballet, swimming.......horrible!  I wonder if the children are happy?????

I let Amelie to learn violin, cos she asked for it for a long time.  I want to give her some freedom to choose, cos I think she has at least 15-20 years in the future to spend time in school, learning and studying! So I want her to be a happy girl for at least in these few years!

hi Amy, you're welcome, though i don't know if anything i typed could be useful...
another thing i would like to add is that probably you should put Amelie with other kids, bcuz i'm an only child and it was really boring growing up: i had to entertain myself playing with the dogs, the cats, the chickens...
but hanging out with other kids will probably give Amelie negative influence...so i can't really comment...
i think it's good to have her occupied with something...hope her violin lessons are going well!

Too early to start the school pressure. Art is fun outside of the house bc the instructor will introduce things you don't know or things you wouldn't want to do in your house - paints and glue can be quite messy. Plus, they have all the supplies ready. It's a good idea to be around other kids doing such fun things.

At 3, we were doing an art and a dance class. Just for recreation and to get out of the house. My girl is a little ambitious though - she wants to do what her big sis is doing - she learned to read t 5.5, adding and subtracting before it was taught in school. I've taught her lots on my own as well.

I'm of the opinion it's not a good idea to "ask" your child if they want to do certain things. I more or less tell them they're going to do so-and-so bc I don't want them to think they can make such choices, esp when they don't know what's best for them. I mean, for fun we'll ask them but we already know what we're going to do regardless of their opinions. haha.

how should i put it...while in college, i had this subject: Training & Development, it's part of Human Resource Management; and in it, i learnt that people can be divided into having different abilities, some would be good at numbers, some good at music, some at words, people's names, logic thinking, all sorts...
it's really hard to tell what Amelie would be talented in yet, and what her preference is...what she's good at, she may not have interest in, vice versa...so i think it's good to let her develop on her own, just for the time being...
and when she grows up, she may have a different mindset: to work for the interest, or to work for the cash...all parents wouldn't want their children to have a hard life, but life is just unpredictable...with all this being said, i don't know how my mum bore with me while i was growing up, especially after my dad's passing...

Did you mention to Amelie that there'd be other children too in the summer courses? I think it's good for her to interact more with other kids. But if she really doesn't wanna go then you've done the right thing not to force her. And just let her have a fun, stress-free summer.

Funny you mentioned about the Maths course...I saw a leaflet this morning about a mini Maths course (number familiarisation) for 3 to 5 yrs old.  Think it's more for fun rather than learning any difficult Maths stuff.

same goes for singapore! the parents are super into their youngest kids' education too .. i strayed from these group of parents.

i agree - kids should enjoy their childhood and learn at their pace!

i heard some kids who learnt too much will get un-interested when they go to school (we call it Primary School here), and become "problem child" because the classes are too boring for them. poor kids!
