    Japanese uses this to "pat" the dust out of the quilt. (See Amelie's demonstration video).  Cloudz7's answer is very close.  JasmineT and a_a_mio, maybe I need you 2 to explain more here.  What's it called in Japanese and why we need it?

    We use it to get rid of  dust and dead bodies of small bugs (mite?).

    haha Amelie seems to like a "Futon Tataki(to beat)". After futon become soft and fluffy by airing in the sun, beat the the dust out . Sometimes its loud noise causes trouble with  neighbor,I use the vacuum cleaner with an attachment that beats and vacuums up the dust.Well, a person of skill would swat a fly by it (^O^)v
