On July 31st, I went over to the Queen's Pier to show respect and support for the cause of heritage conservation...

Hong Kong, in the words of scholar Ackbar Abbas, is a city in constant disappearance...

Too many buildings and structures of historical importance (some even with high potential for generating tourism) have already been torn down, displaced, and taken away from the people of Hong Kong, hence, the city in its development, the 'progressive' strive towards an Asia's World City standard, is constantly burying its past...and without our past, we could very well be lost in the future...

To be honest, I have no personal feelings towards the Queen's Pier, I rarely ventured out there except for the annual habit of watching films at the HKIFF, where some screenings were held at the City Hall...

Yet, this whole movement started up by the three fasting students, 本土行動, and 學聯 have really raised our awareness of the history that have taken place here on this not so attractive pier...

However, the sad truth remains that the voices of the people can always be deemed irrelevant by a piece of paper with a couple of signatures and a chop...

There's no other background building more ironically suited for this rally at the pier...
Can you feel the towering economy and its invisible hand?

I really like this sign...there were loads of expressive artwork like this displayed at the pier, i couldn't helped but felt like I walked into an outdoor exhibition of political installation art when I first got there...

When night falls, more people came around for support...

The three fasting students speaks out...

Quite possibly the last sunrise at Queen's Pier...

Regardless of what will be done to the future of this pier, awareness in the importance of protecting, learning, and giving space to our past, has finally gained the spotlight it urgently deserves...

My deepest respect for those who fought and are still fighting to preserve Queen's Pier...

You've got very good eyes and the skills to capture those great photos! And, your thoughts and feelings are clearly presented! I can definitely see a good film director emerging!!!

NIce shots, they've got this haunting feeling that is totally appropriate to the situation.
Nobody understands the concept of urban fabric and how if you destroy something integral, the rest starts to falls apart till there is nothing left.
Funny thing is we are already lost in the future, don't you think? I mean what is HK identity since the handover? I think if we knew we would have better gov't, better leaders and probably better films too.

Your photos are awesome! Historical buildings give a city its identity. All the money in the world is not going to tell you who you are. Tearing down Queen's pier is a big loss to all of us in H.K.

yeah, you're right... i'm not too optimistic about the universal suffrage either... sigh... like you said, it's a really long road... but nothing is impossible, no?

love Bessa! do they still make the R series? i thought it's discontinued, maybe i got it wrong... what lens did you use for the cameras? 50 f/2.0? seems to me you've got a wider lens though... my favorite one is the one that says, "絕食第96小時" love the composition and the color... thx for sharing...

kit, i shot the photos with two film cameras, a GR-1S and a Bessa R2...

I'm not too optimistic about universal suffrage in HK...it's gonna be a long road...

loved your photos. what camera did you use? Leica? i went there and shot the pier during my last trip in HK... it was a mixed feeling 悲喜交集, happy to see the people's love for this city, sad that the government neglects the voice of the people... and the govn't can and will continue to disregard HK people if we don't have a democratic voting system 一人一選票.

No they were taken away from the Pier site at around noon on Aug 1st. Some of them are still there now, outside of the fences the government put around the site...
