  • John Pattitucci, Jorge Roeder heatwave

This weekend was a heatwave in more ways than one in SF. On Friday night my friend Abel and I went to see Wayne Shorter. John Pattitucci was playing bass. The whole group was phenomenal as much for what they played as what they didn't play. It seemed like any time they started heading toward a trad jazz sound they'd veer away. There were never jazz cliche's - trading four, sax, piano solos etc. as much as they group listening together. Really opened my eyes. Pattitucci sounded great from note one while they rest of the group took a little while to get going. His tone and presence were striking.

Saturday night was another great group, now local pianist Jarrett Cherner played at a little gallery space a couple blocks from my house. His bassist, now based in NYC, Jorge Roeder was out of this world. The whole group had been to the Shorter concert the night before and you could hear the effect on their playing, the way the stretched out and worked together. Roeder has a really unique way of getting around the bass and played with an ease and looseness while shredding, but always musical. This guy was really inspiring.

Finally last night my buddy Ed the sax player had an extra ticket to go see Ana Moura sing Portugese Fado songs. I practiced with the russian for like 4 hours on one song, I Should Care, and blew off all my other work to be outside in the rare couple hot days in SF. Now it's foggy and windy again. Normal weather is back. Otherwise I would have been worried.
