My friend Dennis emailed me that his documentary was just accepted to 5 festivals. Of course this happened in the same way these bands who "suddenly" make it happen to have been working their asses off for years. It's great to see someone's work pay off! Go see Guitar Holiday if you can. It's about a village in Mexico that specializes for generations in making guitars and who has a competition for playing.
Dennis lives around the block from me and aside from making films works at the race track. He's really tall and is a kind of fearless traveler. He went to Japan and hitchhiked all over. As far as I know nobody really hitchhikes in Japan so it must have been quite a site. He also went to China helping shoot a movie. After the shoot he traveled around by himself to small villages. He's eats vegetarian and would go into the restaurant's kitchen and point at the food he wanted. I want to see a film of that! Anyway he's a character..
Yesterday I had breakfast with my friend Aaron the sax player before he gets on the boat again saturday. When I got to his place he had a migraine and said he had to go throw up but didn't know if he could. We were moving some of his stuff out so he can sublet his room. Finally I just moved the stuff out and left him alone. He came out with his face all wet a while later and said he felt better. Yuck.
We used to play on the street and in the subway a lot. He used to make his entire living playing sax on the street + a few gigs. Now he started playing on cruise ships for 6 months at a time. I could have gone but I'm too involved in grad school and some other nonsense. They play every day for 6 months with a couple days off. He said all the other crew members are from other countries and the wonder why someone from the US would take such a low-paying job. He replies that he's a jazz musician and for him it's a fortune!
