  • 7-Eleven becomes Kwik-E-Mart!

    (Japanese and Chinese coming soon!)

As Amy mentioned in her blog two days back,  the awesomest promotion in the history of movie and television is currently underway here in the US:
    今新ザ・シンプソンズ映画為7-11コンビニとても面白キャンペーンする:

7-Eleven Becomes Kwik-E-Mart for 'Simpsons Movie' Promotion

Holy crap!  So they rebranded 12 7-Eleven stores in the US to become Kwik-E-Marts to promote the new Simpsons Movie (in case you don't know,  Kwik-E-Mart is the name of the fake convenience store in the TV show).

So we went down to the store in Mountain View, California to see for ourselves!  Mabel, Kai and I met Amy and Lisa down there yesterday evening:
    僕はシンプソンズのファンスから、友達と一緒北カリフォニアの店へ行った:

It was quite a busy scene at this one.  people were running around the parking lot taking pictures and they had ropes set up for a line to get in.

Inside they had a lot of Kwik-E-mart logos up and these 2.5D cutouts of the popular Simpsons characters:
    店の中ザ・シンプソンズキャラクターは一杯在る。

There were actually a lot, lot more, I only took pics of a few.  My favorite was the Jasper in the Freezer,  also known as 'Frostillicus' (obscure reference to Episode 4F24).

So more than logos and cutouts were the fake Simpsons inspired products, like Squishees, Buzz Cola, Krusty-O's cereal, etc (here's a wikipedia article on all of them).   These were so popular we were faced with empty shelves when we arrived!

But luckily they never run out of Squishee:
    折り好く Squishee (ぷにぷに)何時でも有る:

    美味しかった!

While we were there they brought out a few more cases of the Buzz Cola,  here's my haul:

I am afraid to try the Buzz Cola...  but i guess i'll drink it before I fly back.

Additionally the stores had some humorous Kwik-E-Mart related quotes up in sign form:
    店の中Simpsonsからの面白いコンビニのクォウト看板も在る

    意味わかる?アメリカにコンビニのスタフ一寸失敬人です。。。

Last but not least were the clerks.  They had authentic Kwik-E-Mart shirts,  and for some reason they were all Indian:

They were all pretty nice and not flippant or surely like you'd expect (probably because they were making BANK... after we got in it was too crowded so they started making people wait outside in line again.

I hate to admit it, but after we checked out I was a dick:

He gave me my change and I was like 'what? you didn't say it! come on!'

so he begrudgingly said, in a low monotone voice - 'thank you.... come again.'

Come Again.”(アプーさん毎回チェックアウトの言葉).

We all took a picture out front before heading home:
    かえるの前皆一緒写真撮った:

Lisa, Kai, Mabel, Kai and Amy (all AnD members btw!)

ps - They'll be mad at me for posting this up before them,  but here's a humorous pic Amy and Mabel took:

The operative question should be, after this whole thing is over, how much is going to be shelled out for all those props...

supposedly 7-11 is paying everything, and its not that much (a few million),  they're making it all back and then some.

Okay, but I still feel like it reinforces the stereotype...I didn't mean to offend Etchy - I think that's the first time you've ever responded to any of my comments..lol

The Buzz Cola sux0rs. I went and bought a six pack thinking it'd be like coke or something, but it was some bizarre 7-11 made generic thing.

I read that they also had a cereal made for this event. There was also talk of the famous Duff Beer, but 7-11 thought that would be irresponsible.
and supposedly, 7-11 took a survey of their Indian employees, and "most got the joke and weren't offended.".

7-Eleven did not specially bring in Indians to serve as stereotypical clerks.  These are the regular staff members, and they were being very friendly and joking with customers,  they were quite happy as they were being over run with excited, happy, friendly customers for the last 4 days.

You may notice a giant (hand written) sign that says 'Thank you come again'  right behind the clerks as well.  His annoyance at my request was not because he felt it was demeaning or stereotypical, but rather because had been working all day and was getting tired of people asking him that.

Lastly - from the news articles: "That's the case for Kumar Assandas, a 28-year-old franchisee whose parents immigrated from India. His store in suburban Las Vegas is one of the temporary Kwik-E-Marts.

"I know it's a stereotype, but it doesn't bother me. Everybody knows it's a joke," Assandas said. "I'm a big Simpsons fan myself, and maybe subconsciously it even inspired me to become a 7-Eleven owner." "
