  • Before you get too angry about that Sharon Stone thing...

I know a lot of people in China were shocked and angered by Sharon Stone's comments about the earthquake in Sichuan.

I won't go too into the merits of her statement,  other than to say that it was somewhat akin to people blaming Hurricane Katrina or 9/11 on gay people....

But just to put it into to context about why we shouldn't really be surprised to hear stupid things coming out of Sharon Stones mouth in the first place:

    Video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=99XYUgpG2yQ

Believe it or not,  that video was apparently taken at the very same event in Cannes where she made the 'karma' remark...

...Just wanted my Chinese friends to know that they aren't being picked on by this shining beacon of kindness, morality and righteous behavior. :-P

Religious people who say the conflicts and natural disasters in the world are karmic or predicted in the bible are committing intellectual terrorism and are extremely dangerous.

Christian fundamentalists believe what's going on in the Middle East is the beginning of the rapture and embrace it because that means Jesus Christ will come back.

How can we confront the problems in the modern world with sanity and diplomacy when religious extremists believe that and worse of all, welcome it?

I think there is a time and place to voice opinions and she chose a really bad time to voice hers. I never liked Stone, her actions over the Earthquake just made her even more obviously dumb. I'm really surprised diddy didn't smack her in the mouth.

unwounclock:  are you serious?  so no one in the world should be criticizing america?

have you been to China?  have you seen what its really like there?  lots of things worth criticizing... like "hey, you should try to help all those poor rural people who are working 80 hrs/ week but still starving to death while people in the cities drive benzs and use 100 RMB bills like kleenex."

flagday:  yes,  thats the sad thing, she was actually /trying/ to say something positive about the tibetan people's view on the world, but inadvertently managed to put her foot in her mouth (to Chinese listeners at least).

Haha, I love The Soup. Don't watch it much though, so I missed that.

Hmm, no, God did not send disasters to this world because of gays. But I am gonna go all Christian on you and say I do believe that it was because of something he said in The Bible. I went to a Christian seminar type thing and one of the speakers works in the White House, so he knew a lot more about what they were planning and everything and the disasters all coincided with Bush's plans to attack Israel (God's protected people). He keeps to his Word.

well.. seems like sharon stone is having her share of bad karma.. ppl shouldnt say things like that.. well this will make her think before she speaks.. feeling the backlash haha..

i dont think anyone should say anything bad about China at the moment or anytime in the near future.. China is becoming number one of the world power and America will lag behind.. saying shit would be like saying shit to your future boss..

lets just say Sharon Stone will feel the backlash for years and years.. and it will never end because once u say it.. you cant take it back...

I hear you but I also read early on that there is a Chinese ... not a superstition but a prognosticator, an indicator that a Chinese government has lost the Mandate of Heaven.  Apparently there were a lot of Chinese blogs about it right after the quake, and then the government cut off the discussion.  They certainly didn't let that discussion grow any legs.  But that's just as goofy a concept as karma but people always attach supernatural significance to natural phenomena.

But just to reiterate, Sharon Stone is an ass and I hadn't even heard anything about her until she blurted this out.  I actually think she was trying to make a point about how decent and caring the Tibetans were when they said, no, we want to help our fellow man.  Duh.  She had to have someone tell her that?

Flagday - yes I agree to some extend.   this is something that happens often... blaming the Mexicans or French or 'liberal media' for  any given problem...  The Chinese and Korean politicians like using patriotism to mask internal problems... happens ALL the time... par for the course.  Unfortunately it works...

but in Sharon Stone's case, she put her foot in her own mouth without prompting.  She seems to have an ability to make herself into a  punching bag

E - yes,  exactly.  actually to say that 9/11 was a direct result of US foreign policy is something that most experts in the subject won't even argue but even suggesting publicly is enough to get some Americans furious ('they hate us for our freedom!')...

Quoting Sharon Stone and attributing diplomatic credibility is like quoting Ozzy Osbourne.  She's a whack job!

This Sharon Stone brouhaha is just a red herring to divert attention away from the real villains in this disaster.  Why were schools constructed substandard methods and materials?  Why was development encouraged on fault lines despite Chinese scientists' warnings?  No, earthquakes cannot be prevented, but building codes can be enforced so that 70,000 people do not die in the next quake.  THIS is what the "press" in China should be focused on, not scapegoating some irrelevant American actress with a big mouth and no brains.

P.S.  This admonition applies to the US as well but at least modern buildings have to withstand a certain quake level.  But our infrastructure?  It's pretty scary.

Since when did the Chinese start caring about what Westerners say...about anything?  Ignore the ignorant!  People talk about things they do not even know or understand, because they want to feel good about themselves, or because they simply have nothing better to do with their lives.  Losers will always be losers.  YOU can't convince an ape to think like man, just because he, or in this case, she appears to be like one.
