I just found out a guy that went to my high school had passed away earlier this year.    He had lymphoma and died in March at the age of 37.

He was a few years ahead of Rottendoubt and I at our nerd High School,  I met him on a spring break trip run through our school to the Russia in 1989 (back when it was still the USSR).  He graduated that year and I only saw him one time after that when I visited the University of Maryland a year or two later.  He was a total a hardcore computer guy. (imagine guy with a pony tail programming all night and drinking mountain dew... that kind of guy)

After that it turned Howard ended up getting a PhD from CMU and moving to California in the late 90s to work for a small, unknown company named Google... he was employee #40 I think. (yes, #40...  do the math!)

I met him one more time in 2006 or so when I was visiting Tokyo for a business trip.    At that time he was head of Google Labs Japan.  We had lunch and he showed me around....  made me really wish I had majored in CS... :-P

Anyway, its a bit of a parable... nice guy,  multi-millionaire, you can still die young of a random thing like illness or accident.

    There's a tribute website here:

His Google Employee page is here:
I would post up some embarrassing 1989 photo of myself with him in Leningrad or Moscow, but all of my old photos are back at my parents house... I should scan them all in before they fade away!)

I'm sorry to hear that, my sympathies for the family...

When checking people out for my past 10-year reunion, I found out a classmate who happened to be an idential twin brother passed away.  I knew another friend who died from cancer a couple of years ago, but she had battled it during highschool and college...  Makes us more aware of treasuring those around us and facing the question "What is the purpose of life" seriously...

It's a funny thing... what your friends and schoolmates will become 10 years after graduation... we can only imagine

That's exactly "Death makes us equal in the grave and unequal in eternity"...

The thing to me is that he was one of the most financially and professionally successful people I know...  without even trying he was a multi-millionaire.

Worldly success doesn't make much difference in the big picture...

Death is a part of life... indeed...
May his soul rest in peace...
