  • The power of music

I'm sure everybody has songs that they associate with different people or stages of life. Whether it's memories of relationships, fun times with old friends, or random events, a song can conjure up these memories and remind you of the feelings you had back then.

My husband and I consider Sade's "By Your Side" as  "our song" because it holds special meaning for us. Will Smith's "Men in Black" will always be the song that some friends and I choreographed a dance routine to and performed at a talent show during college. Usher's "Yeah" will always be the party anthem for my fun NYC party days.

An example of a more random song-assocation is this. At a high school dance, I was slow-dancing with a guy to a certain Mariah Carey song. It turned out that he liked me a lot and had the DJ dedicate the song to me. Even though I didn't have the same feelings for him, I remember being impressed by his efforts, and looking back on it, I realize that it made me feel very special. (C'mon, I'd never dated before and never had a guy dedicate a romantic song to me at a school dance! Gotta admit it was smooth for a high schooler!)

Unfortunately, I didn't like him in the romantic way, so we never ended up dating. It just so happens that I love the song and to this day, whenever I hear the song, it still makes me think back to that dance, to one of the first times a guy made me feel so special.

Don't get it wrong, it has nothing to do with me thinking about that guy (esp since I never liked him), it's about being nostalgic with an old memory.

Isn't it amazing how a simple song can stir up such distant, random memories? Talk about the power of music!

What are some songs that evoke certain memories for you?

    Here's mine...

When I was in high school, I did a dance routine to Will Smith's "Wild Wild West"  as an exhibition with my friends.

Let see now...I will always associate any of Usher's songs with my freshmen year of college. My roommate played the album over and over again all year long. Usher's voice was the first thing I heard when I woke up and the last thing I heard before bed.

Ooh ...there is that song "Scandalous" by Tweet. Every time I hear it I remember clubbing in HK.

I do have songs that recall certain events/moments in my life but can't think of any stand-outs at the moment while I'm trying to use the hotel's computer for a total of 20 minutes....

"Wonderful Life" by Black. Waiting in the shuttle bus from Hyatt Charles de Gaulle to drive to Paris city center.

I totally know what you mean about the memory of the guy dedicating something to you. Even if you're not interested in being in a relationship with someone, all the romance that happens in your life ends up being a part of who you are... even after we're already attached to someone.

oh yeah the power of nostalgic music
there are heaps of 80s songs that take me right back there
Save a Prayer (Duran Duran), Funky Town, There's a Beat for you, Sweet Dreams (Eurhymics sp?), Eddie Grant, Bob Marley, Wham (eek), and heaps more
and then at my boarding school there was an old Solid Gold Hits record (Volume 7) so certain songs on that remind me of boarding school, as does David Bowie.
haha and Mama Mia (ABBA) reminds me of being 5.

So true about music evoking memories.  I've been listening to "The Promise" by When in Rome a lot recently.  I loved that song in high school.

    Hmm.. songs that evoke memories:
    - "Walk Like an Egyptian" was a birthday gift that I girl that I had a crush on in the 3rd grade...
    - "Question of Lust" by Depeche Mode -- first kiss song.
    - "With or Without You" by U2 -- listened to it repeatedly throughout middle and highschool

There's a scene in the movie "High Fidelity" where John Cusack decides to reorder his record collection "chronologically" -- remembering his music albums by what point they were relavent in his life. I think that'd be a really interesting experiment to do.

yes, the power of music is very very strong... definitely... =)

I remember an old Rod Stewart song that my brother and I sang at my grandpa's funeral (but I remember the good times with my grandpa when I hear that song now...)

I remember special times when I hear Sugarhill Gang's Rapper's Delight, Lionel Richie's Hello...

oh... and many many other songs that's part of a show/movie/series... it's like the whole story/picture rushing thru my head again... =)
