  Intresting - I actually always felt like McKee was not a technical type of teacher - more of a coach of elements.  Syd Field was super technical by comparison.   You might like Goldman's book Adventures in the Screen Trade.  he does an amazing job and teaching a few great concepts because he is really just talking and telling stories, but showing by example.  Fun book to read.  It's slightly about a different world of Hollywood - but the writing tips are still valid.

  I think you may have finished reading McKee's Story after you were in LA because I recommended it?  :)    Anyway - everyone recommends it because it's really that good.  It really gets to the heart of the matter vs a bunch of weird rules about page counts and such.
