  • What Dreams May Come

Aren't dreams fascinating? I have kept a dream diary for many years, though I don't always remember to write in it. Looking back, I had a few dreams which are very meaningful to me. I am a firm believer that those who have passed on can communicate with us in our dreams.

Back in 1997, two years after my Mom passed away, I was pregnant with my first daughter. I remembered how my mom used to tell me about how wonderful natural childbirth was and used to tell me that when I had a baby I should get a midwife. Well I had done that and one night I had a dream that I had just been examined by this midwife and she told me "You will see some blood in the morning. Don't worry. The baby is fine!"

When I woke up and went to the bathroom, sure enough there was blood...a lot. I went into a panic, figuring I was going to lose the baby. It turned out that my dream was right. The baby was fine. But I did have a fibroid tumor blocking the "exit" so natural childbirth would not be an option.

Later in my pregnancy I had another dream that was telling me almost the same thing. This time, I was in the house where I grew up, cooking in the kitchen and cut myself while cutting some food I was prepping. I went to another room to find my mom and showed her the wound. She didn't say anything but  had a look on her face that seemed to say, "Silly girl...I told you it's nothing!" I immediately calmed down and nodded. She smiled and I woke up. Later that day the bleeding happened again, but I was calm this time. Again, no big deal. Now that I knew the bleeding would not harm the baby, I never had a dream like that again, even though I had a few more bleeding episodes. (I used to joke with my doctor, who always met me at the hospital, that we should start car pooling together.) What I wished I had a dream to warn me about and tell me it would be okay, was when I went for a final check up the day before my scheduled C-section and the doc could not find the baby's heartbeat. I don't know if his equipment was faulty or what, but it took a good ten minutes and two dopplers to find her...and it was actually her kicking the thing out of his hand that made me know she was ok!  Whew! scary.

After my daughter was born, I wished that my dad was still alive (he died when I was 15) because he loved kids so much. A few weeks after I came home with the baby, she was taking a nap with me on our bed and I dreamed that my dad was hugging me and saying "I Love you!" over and over. I woke up feeling warm all over and I felt so happy. I looked at the baby and she had woken up and was smiling too. It felt like we shared a dream.

Recently I have a lot of dreams of being back in high school and it's the first or second day and I am leaving one class but I can't remember what class is next or where to go. Though one time I did dream that I went to the main office and asked for a copy of my schedule.

Another recurring dream is that I am walking with a friend or family member (most often my husband) and we come upon a film crew.  (Maybe this dream comes from reviewing so many DVD's and their 'making of' features!) Sometimes I'm invited to a party after filming, sometimes I'm given a small job on the set.  This kind of dream I can see as one that works with the theory that "a dream is a wish fulfilled" as I love films and acting (used to do some community theater and such when I was a teen) and I've always been facinated by the art of film making.

Some dreams are influenced by your day. I used to work in an animal hospital where the ver used pillowcases to help restrain cats. My husband told me that one night I sat up, ripped the pillowcase off my pillow and said "Doc needs this!!" and then went back to sleep. Oh well. At least I don't walk in my sleep.
