    An email forwarded to me by a coworker a couple of weeks ago.

    Think your shoes are uncomfortable? 
    The latest rage in Japan ....

     ... now look at the kind of 'shoes' that was worn back in the day of the Geisha... I can't imagine...















    Now I'm not sure about whether the first part of this email is true or not, but if it is, I honestly have no idea how anyone can walk in those heels. It's like walking on your tippy toes all day long. I think if I tried to walk in them, I might really just tip over. As for the second part of the email, I believe the pics were taken in China and not Japan. Whoever posted the pics or started the email should get their facts straight. Anyways, I'm so glad that I wasn't born back in the days when women still had to wrap their feet up like that so that they can fit into those tiny shoes. Looks so painful.

    yea the foot binding looks painful... my great grandmother had her foot bound... and then my grandma almost did too but during my grandma's childhood years, it was war time so she didn't bind her feet... OUCH!

    Those Japanese shoes look dangerously unstable and uncomfortable. Can you imagine some girl going dancing in one of those first tip-toe pointy shoes? That's nuts.

    As for the China foot-binding, I heard that the bones in the toes get fractured/broken as they're trying to grow inside the bind but are unable to grow straight.... OUCH!

    yeah, foot binding in China had nothing to do w/ japanese geisha...   and as of today, i have yet to see any shoes like that anywhere (in japan as we speak)

    I heard about the second part. They start squishing your feet in as soon as you're born. I guess once you're old enough to even decide what you want, it's already too late to decide you want normal shoes, cos your feet would have already moulded by that time. How people could do such things is beyond me.

    i've heard that foot binding results in death if it's not well done when the blood clot in the are turns septic and flows back into the heart. urgh. totally sadistic.

    Those Japanese are totally demented when it comes to their appearance. Their exterior is sooo important. You may as well set a surgery date with your podiatrist if you should decide to take up that pointy-toed fashion trend. Maybe a couple of podiatrist surgery dates....and a chiropractor too. Maybe an orthopedic surgeon too. haha. Maybe a psychiatrist too.

    Foot binding were for the wealthy girls. The rural girls might have had their feet bound if the parents wanted them to marry into a higher station. If they could afford to not have the girl working in the fields with the rest of the family. The family would receive a generous dowry from a wealthier family who chose to take a peasant's daughter for a wife. Some rich families did resort to that like for concubines or if the son had some issues like mental retardation or something.

    I can't really make out how the foot was distorted in the barefoot pic. Painful, is all I know.

    Jaine, I think it's still the women who undergo the most self-mutilation and torture to appeal to men.  Crazy, huh?  As for the Japanese shoes, please, that can't be for real.  How does that even make your feet look sexy?  It looks like it would appeal to the S&M crowd.

    it does look incrediably painful.... these days many woman (and men) starve themselves, work out excessively and/or undergo painful cosmetic procedures in order to acheive the current ideal of beauty.
