  Just what is Crazy Self Help KTV? Karaoke therapy for the insane?　Quite a funny little sign I saw in 哈尔滨/Harbin two weeks ago. Harbin was the last leg of a trip to the far north east of Heilongjiang province. Two words of advice about camping in Heilongjiang. First, camping in  marshlands is a BAD idea. Yes, there's the problem or having to search for solid ground under you to set up tent, but the big problem with it is the mosquitoes. Stagnant water and camping don't mix. We're not talking about several hundred mosquitoes, or even thousand, but millions. Before we'd even set up camp our faces felt like the backs of feral toads. Advice number two: don't go camping on a disputed border. It turns out that the swamp area we had picked for our frolicking adventure is claimed by both China and Russia (don't you hate it when that happens?). So what have the Russians done? They've built this amazing Russian Orthodox church smack in the middle of the swamp, just to prove it's their land! In the photo below you can see the church. How many people go there for sunday service I wonder. Because the roof is gold, you can literally see this church from miles around, it's like a blinding beacon when the sun's out. You can see the international border for China at the bottom of the picture, and the water is one of the canals of 黑龙江 (the river, not province). We bumped into a soldier who showed us his version of the map, and it showed the land above the canal as part of China. Our map, downloaded from Google, showed it as Russia. In the end we were rescued by a border patrol boat and taken back to a military base where we spent the night - mosquito free!
