"Shanghai Bride" <上海新娘> has sold out for tomorrow's night's screening in Shanghai!Bookings filled within 16 hours. Both myself and the producer are floored; we'll both be in attandence and aswering a few questions after the film.
The telemovie 《暮鼓晨钟》 screened on national tv here in China on the weekend. I play an Italian factory-parts expert, still in love with an old flame from his university days in China. Unfortunately, my most difficult and emotionally exhausting scene (which I stayed up all night before the shoot preparing!) was cut from the final film. It was a big argument scene at Tianjin's nearby industrial wharf - in the scene the camera rises from the sea by crane, against the backdrop of massive ships - the supposed big closing scene of the film! The final version is much better without the scene, but still sad to see it on the cutting room floor nonetheless.
I've spent three days of the last week as back-up DOP for an architecture documentary. Spent 13 hours on shoot yesterday, most of it in -6 degree temperatures without gloves on (so that I could adjust focus/zoom etc). Was so cold! Within 5 minutes my fingers were no longer functioning - terrible pain. The show required close-up shots of the new Olympic stadiums, the bird nest and the ice cube, so I climbed some bricks beside the walls there, set up the tripod, shooting over the fence. Also went to the 798 art zone to interview the curator of the just-opened Ullens Centre for the Arts (very impressive), and spent a morning shooting celebrity archictect/artist Ai Wei Wei (艾未未) at work. I had shot him a bit last year as well, when he had a giant letter "F" shaved into the back of his head! This time no "F", but a commune of personal videographers there, seemingly following every moment of the artistic process. Must be rather weird to always have people shooting you at your office and home!
