I was looking through the papers and saw that there will be an eclipse this afternoon at 5:45pm.   Hmm, I'll still be at work during that time.  I've never actually seen an eclipse, only on TV and that doesn't count.  In the past, I used to hear all these stories of how some persons looked directly at the eclipse and became blind afterwards.  While I don't think that's entirely true I never had an interest in looking at the real thing... even with the special tools used to view the eclipse safely.

Also, I've been reading many blogs on Lydia Shum's passing.  It's really sad, my sincere condolences to her family.

I actually watched the eclipse last night. It was really cool. Just sucks that I didn't get to take a good video of it.

yea I hear about this Moon Eclipse also. In Poland it was at very early morning (4:00), but sky was covered by clouds ;/
Fortunately Moon Eclipse is frequently, more frequently than Solar Eclipse.
In the past I saw several eclipses of Moon and Sun.

If you want looked at the Moon eclipse - this is safe :) You don't need to worry, nothing wrong couldn't happen with your health - only you can freeze If night is cold :) Looking at the Moon is alaways safe (only looking at the Sun is dangerous). Moon only reflect light from the Sun (small part of light), like everything on the Earth and Earth, and other planets.
Moon Eclipse is when Moon, Earth and Sun are on straight line. Earth is in centre, and shade the Moon. Sun is opposite of Moon, so Moon Eclipse is only when it is Full Moon.

Only Sun Eclipse is dangerous - ever looking at the Sun is dangerous - because Sun is very bright (shine of light, UV, infrared light - this is dangerous for eyes). But If someone use a special astronomical very dark filters this is safe.

I writing a lot, hehe, I hope that not too long and you can understand me :)

The eclipse was blocked out by clouds in Britain when it happened at 3am this morning :(, mind you I was sleeping like a baby by the time it occured.

Sad news about Lydia, she was a very popular lady.

The lunar eclipse will be safe to view with the naked eye, though it will look even better with binoculars or a telescope.  What Peachey is describing is for a solar eclipse, which is definitely not safe to view with the naked eye.  So, if you are in the view zone, and there are no clouds, happy moon gazing.  We here in China will miss the whole thing.  :-p

Yes, there's going to be a lunar eclipse at 5:43 Pacific time. Here's a technique to see it safely - get 2 sheets of paper like construction paper. Doesn't have to be full-size. Cut a small hole in the center of one of the sheets. During the eclipse, hold the sheet w/ the hole between the other sheet of uncut paper and the sun. You will see the image of the shape of the sun on your uncut paper thru the hole. It's pretty neat.
