went into duane reade today to get one of my daily needs - apple & eve's cranberry juice. i'm keeping a daily morning doze of this in my body. trying to. at least. hahaha!
while waiting in line, i spotted one snack tht captured my attention the most, out of all these other wonderfully, colorful snack package–Cracker Jack.
Cracker Jack wow. i love how the old skool-ness of this packaging is kept. yet, in my mind at tht time, i bet the way original design looks way better. i grab a one home, and munch it on my subway ride. one thing though, it never has the peanuts in the caramel popcorn as the package stated...i wonder. but the other thing tht captures me the most is the 'gift' in the snack! hahaha! just brings back my childhood memories...
i just love Cracker Jack's latest (or the one tht's in the market) package design with the patriotic color scheme.
look at the goodie surprise design (pic 4). it stills look modern!!!!! either i'm going back in time in my taste in design style, or old skool-ness just never dies! long live old skool!
KINOS now this one, most of you probably wouldn't know unless you are born in malaysia. hahaha!! this is THE brand tht in my memory, dominated us kids' vocabulary of snack. i remember i actually anticipate the TV commercial to see what is the toy tht's given out with the snack each week (or month, can't recall...), then i'll go check it out.
won't mention all, but these 2 are the famous ones, Ding Dang (blue package) and Tora (white package). each of these 2 snack comes with chocolate milk balls (similar to Whoppers) but i personally get motivated to get it for the toys.
i love how when i was young, i get motivated tht easily, saving pocket money to get this snack. AND my aunt back in my dad's hometown has a coffee shop tht sells snacks, tht's our favorite stop in our trip back. hahaha! but we still won't get neither Ding Dang nor Tora (very seldom) cause it's consider expensive snack at tht age, and it was like RM1 (which is 35cent USD today) for a pack.
i miss such time. always good to think back. getting school break and lining up to get these snacks from the canteen's snack lady. love it.
oh, i think until now, these packaging NEVER CHANGE. it stays the same. SO GLAD! i just love the Ding Dang blue color choice. such a strong color! thus, i hate the web page. warning: turn off your volume before clicking the site link above. it seems to be in the in between stages of evolving to today's design trend. i rather they stay old-skool. at least the packaging does which is the biggest PLUS! :)
Pringles yet another classic. who doesn't love this snack? looked it up online, here are the stages the logo went through. haha! very interesting. though i have to agree tht the facelift is a great job, but i still like the more classic logo in the 1990's. just look friendlier, and not so much stylize.
oh! and here... news: read it. MUST! you'll be entertain. hahaha! click here
Michelin ...since i'm in logo topic, last week, i saw the latest Michelin commercial and i have to say, good job so far. not tht i follow up with Michelin's commercial but this one gets my vote for the feeling tht it achieve, at least for me. usually not a big fan of animation related commercial. but but but, i love Coke's commercial in theater, created by Psyop, one of my favorite broadcast design studio. tht will be in next blog. hahaha! here's the Michelin guy tht captures my heart tht night.
...however, after this commercial i notice ONE thing...THE LOGO WENT ON DIET!!!!!!!! again, i looked it up, can't really find the real study on it (or i just didn't look hard enough) but it sure is different from one of the old logo. Michelin guy, Bibendum really get on a diet/work out program!
notice the difference? man i was shocked! i prefer the chubby one. stylize. what causes this? the hollywood anorexic trend? maybe i'm just too stuck in my head of how i don't like things that get modified cause of the demand or the market trend. it does make sense in the business part...but design. i guess i'll face this challenge when i really experience this field. so far, i like the original, usually. i think the more basic, simple it is, the beautiful it gets. i know nowadays, many try to achieve 'dimension' in 2D graphics...but i still think sometimes, graphic should stay as flat as it can be! hahaha!!! ...i'm blabbing too much. :P
ok. hope you enjoy reading my little venture around, yet again, design. i love old skool-ness. don't you? hahah!!!
do u like the chocolate as well? haha, my classmate all throw into rubbish can, but i find it's ok for me, ha, i ask them throw into my mouth better, i got toys from my pack n all the chocolate from them everytime! XD
Yes we'll have to do something soon. Maybe dim sum is better. It's getting a little hot for hot pot :P or maybe we should do a field trip. Let me look into it.
renren - you gotta show what's ketchup chips!!! such interesting snack!
janechu - haha! yea...UPS logo. a nice concept indeed. better than fedex actually. though everyone is hype about the fact tht he/she sees the arrow between the e and the x. *shrug*
butter - OLD SKOOL RULZZZZZ! wanna do dim sum? hahaha! OR my forever not eaten HOT POT!
peachey - man...i wish there is a wallmart in the city sometimes. :P
yea. pringles does have the great stacking snack design. it also makes consumer felt worth buying instead of those snacks tht probably filled up with 'air'. LOL!
joaanesanderson - :) this bring back happy memories to me too! *smile*
I agree with you about old skool design :) You just shouldn't mess with a good thing esp. just to dictate to trends in the market as that tends to change all the time anyway. I prefer the shape of the original Michelin man too.
I love cracker jacks too. It's 4 for 99 cents at Walmart. haha. Loaded with sugar so I don't eat them anymore. =( Pink popcorn is a favorite too.
Pringles! I was fascinated with the way they're shaped and stacked. So neat and tidy compared to old skool chips. Don't you agree? I'll eat one or two sometimes.
Michelin. I like the baby commercials. The babies sittin' in a floating tire. So cute.
on the topic of logos... I've noticed that Chevron gas station made a subtle change to their logo... kinda cool... hmm.... there was another logo that I noticed was "stylized" as well, but I can't recall right now...
the man in the very first logo makes the face that says "Don't Eat this!" hahaa... the uplift in the last logo gives it the YUM YUM feeling.... hehee... but I can see how the classic logo in the 90s is friendlier... =)
