Goodbye Poker

After work on Monday a bunch of us got together and had an impromptu Going Away dinner for Andrew.  We got some good Pho at a Vietnamese place in Central... during dinner the conversation turned to what we should do afterwards, someone suggested a final poker game before Andrew leaves...  so we did.

It was a pretty big game, we had 10 players (11 actually, if you could the one pair).  We even got Amanda to play for once, and amazingly she did quite well, she was in the chip lead for most of the game.  I started out slowly but I had a few lucky hands that kept me in it even though I didn't have very good cards most of the time.  


Ultimately I started doing better and better and took out a few guys.   I went into the last three or four without a lot of chips but I felt pretty confident.

Ironically my best cards of the night came in the final hand.  It was me vs. Berton head to head.  I had tried to go 'All in' on him a few times and he had always folded.  I was dealt a pair of Aces ('pocket rockets') and did 'All-in' for the 3rd time.  I was quite happy that he finally called me and showed a relatively weak hand (Q,9) or something.  

But poker, despite being a game of skill, has a random element in it as well (aka 'stochastics').  Berton got a lucky draw and ended up getting a straight.  doh!  busted!  

Well, you can't win all the time.  I'll have to settle for 2nd once in a while. ;-)
