  • I am starting to feel sorry for the Tiger...

I was going to try to exercise when i got home from work tonight, but then i started watching the news coverage of the Bhutto assassination thing in Pakistan... very depressing.

In other news,  I'm sure you guys heard about the deadly Tiger attack at the SF Zoo the other day.  At first it seemed really horrific that a tiger had escaped and attacked three zoo visitors.   Ultimately the police shot the tiger after it had killed one of person and severely mauled two others.

But now that details are coming out and it looks like it wasn't a case of the tiger escaping because of a gate left open or a design flaw in the enclosure.   And the three victims didn't just happen to be in the wrong place at the wrong time.  It looks like the victims may have been taunting the tiger and that it perhaps even climbed out by grabbing onto one of their legs as they dangled them into the enclosure....

    Here's some video:
    http://edition.cnn.com/2007/US/12/27

I'll wait for the rest of the details to be released by the police before i nominate these guys for the Darwin awards... but it obviously wasn't a random attack.

hmm...  now i kind of feel sorry for that tiger for getting shot because of these idiots.  All the wildlife and zoo experts they've interviewed on TV have pretty much given the same answer:  The tiger was just being a tiger.  You can't blame it for doing what a tiger is supposed to do.

And one of them brought up a good point.  All the 'outrage'  you see from politicians and community leaders about these kinds of deaths (whether they are from escaped zoo animals or mountain lion or shark attacks) are really foolish.  He pointed out that something like 800 people in the US are killed every year by HORSES....  compare that to the 5 or 6 who die per year from 'wild animal' attacks.  :-/

    RIP Tatiana

It appears there is a witness who said 4 boys were at the exhibit.  The 2 survivors (but not Sousa) were taunting.  Also, police found an empty vodka bottle in the car of the 2 teenagers...

I'm a little biased, as far as I am concerned the tiger was provoked, so little sympathy can be given to those that caused it's rage. It was a sad end for the tiger, I wish it had of been a possible solution to shoot it with tranq's instead.. You are right about zoos too, they are in this day and age an unfortunate necessary evil.

wow,  what a coincidence.  I'm glad you guys weren't there when that happened!  (but of course it wouldn't have happened this way if there had been more people around...)

zoos:  if they are done well i think its an acceptable evil.  its better to have people go to zoos and learn to appreciate the animals.  if no one knew what a panda looked like, they probably wouldn't really care if their habitat is being destroyed.

or worse yet, if the only place to see a panda was up on the side of a mountain,  they'd be doomed for sure.

I'm ambivalent about zoos: On the one hand, they teach many things to people about animals, they might be a sanctuary for animals that might be endangered or have lost their habitat in the wild; and on the other hand, they are simply prisons.  It's too bad the this Siberian tiger had to die... probably for some stupid kids' folly.

The initial reports made it seem like the tiger made an unprovoked attack on victims who had the bad luck to be there at the time. How the hell could anyone think it was a good idea to tease or torment a tiger. That being said, how did the guys have the access to tease the tiger in the first place? It sounds like the zoo will be taking a closer look at things, I assune factoring in for assholes who would be stupid or drunk enough to do that to a tiger. I feel sorry the tiger's life ended that way, too.

I never did like zoos & stopped going to them a long time ago. It broke my heart to see animals meant to run free being enclosed. i know there's been a big push to make zoos a more natural environment for the creatures under their care, and animals in zoos live longer than animals in the wild & are protected from lack of food & predators, but still. Apparently it was not protected enough from these men. I agree with Etchy, Tatiana was just doing what tigers do.

I was surprised there were two separate tiger stories these past two weeks....one from US, one from China.......a coincidence perhaps? Very strange...

As for Bhutto I felt sad and I cannot help but think something is not right about it....

Sometimes I ask why is the world so cruel as to not let people live in peace? Is it because of their karma? Or their ignorance?

Last night I conjectured that the guys were prolly taunting the tiger and it somehow got out (by the help of the 3 guys??) and went straight for them. How do you taunt a tiger? Were the boys daring each other to go into the moat? Were they actually dangling their body parts into the enclosure? What dumb-asses!

bhutto:  what is there to say?  kind of like steve irwin... tragic but not very unexpected.

ps- it got about 5 hours of continuous coverage on the news today.  the tiger only got about 10 minutes over the same period.

I feel like commenting about the tiger attack, but at this point I'm just speechless. lol

I did think it interesting however that Bhutto getting assassinated got one sentence in this blog, but guy getting mauled by tiger got a few paragraphs. I guess it's because the tiger attack is more interesting than the political assassination to most people. I wonder if this is how US news media thinks as well, i.e., reporting news that maximizes entertainment value/viewership rather than based on the importance/significance of the news event.

Yes, I watched the news, but you know in China, a few days ago/ a week (I tried to catch up the newspapers when I was away), someone climbed in the cage to kill the Siberian tiger, cut its head off and took its skin.  There's really nothing impossible in China.

I am getting fustrated over the assassinations of political figure but such things will always continue..

I was sad that 1 victim died during the tiger attack... A tiger will only attack when it's threatened or hungry.
Another thing about animals being enclosed may developed some form of depression too.
Maybe the zoo should start checking on the design flaws.
