Movie:

Iron Man (2008)

A couple of us went to see an early screening of 'Iron Man' tonight (it opens wide here tomorrow, May 1st, a day ahead of the US!)

I had heard good things about this (93% on the tomatometer!?) but didn't really know what to expect... iron man isn't my favorite 'super hero'... and i can't say i was huge Robert Downey Jr. fan....

but that said, this movie is actually pretty good: its funny, pretty well made and most important of all has strong performances. (or maybe its that the performances are strong enough to make it look funny and well made!)

IT IS a comic book genre film, so don't expect 'Citizen Kane'... expect lots of details that only a comic book geek would notice, expect a long origin sequence, and of course expect an open ended conclusion that is fuel for a sequel...

Downey, Jeff Bridges, Terence Howard and Gweneth Paltrow do good jobs of giving their relatively one dimensional characters some depth.

"A man and his dream.... Seabisket Tucker!"

But for what it is, its pretty good! One of the better comic book films of recent history -- not quite X-men 2 or Spider-Man 2, but almost.

The engineer in me takes issue with some of the technology presented in the movie.. it'd have been a little more believable if it weren't for the flying maybe.

At the end of the day, this is a comic book movie, but it was definitely entertaining. I give it a 8/10... for its genre is good.

ps - hey don't forget to STAY FOR THE END OF THE CREDITS!

pps - i actually started yelling at this demon child and his negligent parents about 4 times during the movie... i need to learn how to curse better in Cantonese.

Thanks for the review. Hubby and I are supposed to go see it this weekend. My thing with comic book movies has always been how much they change the original story but I'm not familiar with Iron Man so I probably won't have any problems.

Never read the comics so I wasn't sure about the movie, but I'll give it a go. Seen as I didn't read the comic I can't moan all the way through like I did with X MEN.

Yeah I noticed people leave mobile phones on and chat all the way through movies in Hong Kong Cinemas. People get shouted at for eating popcorn too loudly here :D

I'll remember not to watch movies in HK. You said its not as good as X-men 2 and Spiderman 2, maybe Iron man 2 will be better! That way they can drop the long origin.

Anyways, I loved the comic books, so can't wait for the movie!

Oh I watched this awesome Nova program on the Yamato yesterday, I know you can appreciate that....I love WWII stuff
