Lust, Caution (2007)

I just got back from the Whampoa theater. I ended up seeing Lust, Caution tonight cause I didn't get out from work early enough to see anything else... I had been resistant to see the HK version of the film because of the cuts (but at least unlike the G-rated China version, this version has ALMOST all the naughty bits apparently).

But I never got a chance to see it in the US so I decided to catch it now before it leaves the theaters.

Some people seem to really like this movie and some people just find it boring... I did find it a bit slow at points (its like 2.5 hours long mind you!), but ultimately Ang Lee builds up the tension (sexual and regular) and the film gets pretty captivating.

The chemistry between Tang Wei and Tony Leung really hooks you in after the first hour or so. She plays a young student who is enlisted to trap a Chinese official in the Japanese Occupation government during WWII. Tony Leung is a powerful, yet suspicious man who's power has somewhat gone to his head (especially in the bedroom). :-P

The sex itself was not that big a deal (i think the HK version cut out the BJ scene, the worst you see are some pubes and some undercarriage...) but the weird S&M thing they had going on kind of bugged me, but i suppose it makes sense to the character development (in Ang Lee's forbidden love obsessed mind!)

this was one of my favorite scenes (and they kept their clothes on!) :-P

Weird sadism aside, the only other minus for the film is the fact that the supporting characters all kind of disappeared for the last 1/2 of the movie, but by the end of the movie you'll probably have forgotten how the story even started... (because the Tony Leung / Tang Wei sex drama will overtake your attention).

I'll give it an 8/10. If you set aside 2.5 hours and you expect a drama with a SLOWLY developing plot, I think you'll be pretty entertained... (if you're just waiting for T&A, you're going to be disappointed)

I still haven't seen it yet. Nobody wants to go watch it with me. I think I might have to wait for the DVD to come out.

I loved this movie and everything about it. I thought the direction was sublime and the film a masterpiece. I'm glad you enjoyed it. I'm going to watch it again soon.. And I can't wait for the dvd for all the special features and especially for the director's commentary.

I still haven't seen it (but I definitely will), but have you seen Hitchcock's 'Notorious’ which has nearly an identical plot (without the pubes)? I know it's based on the Eileen Chang short story, but the plot of the movie sounds so similar AND Tang Wei looks very much like Ingrid Bergman... ‘Notorious' is still an awesome, sly, cunning movie AND it has the benefit of Cary Grant playing the kind of slimeball that would send his lover in as an undercover agent... probably a much stronger performance than Wang Leehom...

i think it was more than the diamonds... it was the fact that she was a relatively unwilling participant in the whole thing, despite being the one making all the sacrifices... and in the end he finally worked his way into her heart... (not just from the diamond)

The film didn't feel that long esp since I took a bathroom break. I did not see a BJ scene. I liked the scene where she sang to him - she sings very well. Had to shut my eyes during that stabbing scene. I thought it was pretty dumb how Ang had her giving herself up like that. I guess diamonds can have a way with people.

i haven't seen it yet, but i heard it's based on a book? and all the sex is supposed to be TL's character's stress outlet. but it's just what i HEARD. haven't really read up on it or anything

yeah, based on the low box office #'s in the US, I'm guessing not too many places are showing it. (being NC-17 and all...)

Thanks for the review! I want to see the movie but will probably have to wait for the DVD....I haven't seen it advertised in our local area and I'm not driving to Seattle to see it.
