  • China got ROBBED!!

I have been watching the Olympics every day and watching any events I can. But it seems the more I watch, the more upset I get with the commentators. Most of the time I just mute the TV because I don't want to hear their rude comments.

And today, it went over the line for me with the Gymnastics Events Final with the Vault. I actually applaud all the gymnasts for their efforts and hardwork because I think this is one sport that requires a lot of training / practice and time and effort and I think they are all wonderful.    But to say that Cheng Fei from China ripped off the USA Team is wrong. And what's worse is that they said that because the Olympics is in China, the China athletes have the added advantage to win at the events. (?????????) WTF?!? That's just wrong.

But for the Floor Event, I thought China got ROBBED!! I felt that Jiang Yuyuan's routine should have been higher. But in the end, the USA team got silver and bronze and everything was okay again? the tone of voice changes and they say that the gymnasts are all awesome and they are all winners. WTF?!? The way they comment about the games, it feels like USA should automatically get a medal in ALL events no matter what happens. Well, in my opinion, all the athletes work hard and they should all be judged equally and have the equal opportunity to perform. But we really shouldn't comment in such a manner.

This actually is a big controversy now with words saying that China is unfair in their scoring. Well to me, it's hard to say what's fair or not fair. There were definitely scores that I thought were over-scored and ones that were under-scored. But these are all just our own opinion. But to say that China ripped off the USA team is pretty harsh. And like it or not, that is just my opinion.

sorry if I have offended anyone. You can read the story here

    -------------

Another sad news today, Liu Xiang withdrew from the Olympic Events. I was really looking forward to seeing him run because I missed it 4 years ago. But I would rather see him withdraw than to see him get hurt on the track.

As the Olympics continue, I hope that there won't be anymore controversies or "negative" comments from the annoying commentators and that we can just enjoy all the Olympic events. Come on, the Olympics only happens once every four years. Just enjoy it!!

Oh, regarding women's Floor Exercise finals....you must take into account the degree of difficulty of the routine...the higher the degree of difficulty with the fewest amount of errors wins.  This is why the results ended up being the way they were and the commentators were pleased.  Nothing to do with the fine athletes....it was the accurate and fairly judged event.

First of all, Cheng Fei didn't rip of anybody....it was the poor judging and Cheng Fei and Alicia Sacramone were just the innocent bystanders to this fiasco.  These judges are judging outstanding gymnasts of a calibur that they don't have in their own countries.  Is there anybody of Cheng Fei's calibur in Argentina?  No.... In Spain?  No....these judges aren't taking the execution deductions because of their lack of experience in seeing vaults with a degree of difficulty starting at a 7.0.

You know....this same thing happened on the men's vault final in 2004 in Athens....Marian Dragulescu (Romania) tied with Kyle Schefled (Canada) but the bronze was awarded to Marian even though he totally fell on his face during his second vault, just like Cheng Fei did in this Olympics.  Were you outraged then?  Do you even remember this?  The same NBC commentators (not Bela) were there and they were outraged because they felt that somebody who sticks their landings should be getting medals, not someone who lands on their face.

So, I'm getting a little tired of everybody thinking that the US is out to slam China.  They aren't.  The only one that feels this injustice is Bela and I don't know why he's being allowed to commentate on this subject by NBC.

These games ultimately are about athletes who have trained for a particular event and are fortunate enough to represent their country, an honor in itself, in the arena of good sportsmanship.  The athletes are the primary focus....and that's how I like to enjoy my Olympic viewing experience.  =)

I'm glad the Canadian broadcasters don't make as many comments... they usually just focus on the event...

Word girl!  I guess we share similar feelings.  I didn't get a chance to check my feeds before I wrote my blog this morning.  Mr. B and I actually felt the same as you with regard to Jiang Yuyuan. We didn't understand how she didn't score higher for her routine.  And we were pretty outraged when Bela was going off on Cheng Fei.  Like she was the one who gave the scores. I also feel like he favors Luikin over Johnson who is actually better all around esp.on floor.  I understand it's a US broadcast but the bias has been out of control. It was so annoying during the men's events how they kept showing the US team giving shoutouts on camera instead of the Chinese performing their routines.  Bob Costas has been annoying too.  He sounded so irritated when he was talking about Lin Dan celebrating after he won the gold in Badminton.  Hey he earned that right!  I'm thinking about writing into NBC.

Yeah Mr. B's shoulder was a big ouchie.  It still plagues him to this day.  Totally freaks me out when it slips :(

i think its quite fair.. the judges are made up of people from different countries so they cant all be biased toward wanting China to win.. maybe its just because the commentators are biased and rooting for USA..

i feel the same way as you do jane, i hated it that americans kept on having these negative rumours about the chinese, from the opening to the game ugh how disgusted i am. I feel that everyone worked hard for their games and i think they should all stop the rumors.

Yeh, I didn't know what Bela was talking about. Chinese girl touched down on her knee but she had the more difficult routine on the horse. I'd pretty much discounted anything he says bc he's too emotional and pro-US.

    dont get why they get bela carola to be a guest comment w/ bob costas. he is unpro in saying that cheng fei ripped off the us in the vault. then when floor exercise was won by us w/ silver and bronze, with gold going to romania, he then said, all of 'em are well deserved to be on the podium. oh puh-leeez! we should just write a letter to nbc now for all the biased comments said by the commentators..ahhaa  =o{
oh btw, i was so hoping to see liu xiang compete since i also missed him at athens. guess it'll be another 4 yrs..

That's very unprofessional, commentators should have an unbiased mind when on the job because what comes out of their mouth has certain effect on people.

China does have it's advantage because it's the home country, spectators support directly affects the competitors state on mind. It'll be the same if USA host the Olympics, Team USA will them have its advantage because it's the home country.

But like you said, enjoy it. TEAM USA has Phelps to be proud of =)

I think anyone who thinks that scoring in any Olympics is fair is crazy.  The judges are just humans and try as they might they all have biases.  That's why the races are the fairest - you get to the finish line first, you win.  Gymnastics, diving, etc., are all subjective.

Jane, watching with the sound off sounds like a good choice for you.  I wonder what the commentators at CCTV are saying in China?  There has to be bias there too.

But as for the difficulty of a vault prevailing over sticking the landing, I'm old school.  I don't like it.  The penalty should be greater for that, but as of this Olympics, those are not the rules.

such a shame about Liu, i was looking forward to seeing him. I remember the feeling I got when seeing him in Athens.

Yeah I had a row with my sister  when she visited yesterday, she says they are all biased to the asian nations!, said the boxing was all fixed!, Why is everyone trying to destroy the games with political thinking.

I only feel irritated and disgusted when the female running commentator does the sayings. She's totally bias and she gets her information all wrong! And not only in gymnastics, last night during the Badminton Mixed Doubles event, the umpire was so against China! Overrulled the calling of the linesman twice and gave the advantage to the opponent. Grrrr...Thank god the Chinese pair won. YAY!

I've been sighing about Liu Xiang since he tore the number away from his thigh. SIGHHHH
