Peachey's latest blog mentioned that she wants someone to sketch her. And this reminded me of the art class that I took when I was in High School probably some 10 years ago. The final assignment for the class was to sketch a picture of ourselves. So I found a elementary school picture to sketch. Well, here's the result of it. Not that great.

That was done with charcoal and it was a big mess! There was another assignment where we had to look at ourselves in the mirror and sketch ourselves. That one was in color, using chalk (if I remember correctly) and that one turned out horrible.  I looked at it again while I was digging up all this old work and it still looks horrible. HAHAA! So I'll save myself and not post that up.

Anyhoo, art class was fun; we did a bunch of drawings. My first ever canvas painting. Making my first ever plate and bowl. That was really cool. And of course, how can I forget about construction paper.  That was the coolest thing ever. There was an assignment where we used a black construction paper and cut out a simple drawing. And to add color to the drawing, we fill the holes with color tissue paper. I did a simple rabbits drawing.

The black construction paper faded because it was up on the window for display. I remember how in art classes we always start with the basics of drawings and then we slowly lead into shading (which is usually the hardest thing to get right). When I was in college taking Rapid Visualization, shading was something we had to learn all over in addition to perspective drawing. Perspective drawing is tough. I had to make sure everything was lined up where it was supposed to be.

But the thing I loved from Rapid Viz was using pastels to create textures like wood, marble, concrete, etc. It was really crazy seeing the results were so realistic. Here is a wood table top.

Anyway, check out my photo album with more of my _funky_ drawings.

    Cute lil Jane :)
I liked art class too but I was better at conceptualizing than actually executing.

I think you did a good job on the sketches, you shouldn't be so hardon yourself. I always wished I did well in art class. But like in dancing i have two left feet, in art I have two left hands!

Great job of sketching!  I think putting 3-D into 2-D on paper has got to be one of the most difficult jobs ever.  Great tables!!!

Drawing is HARD if you haven't the inborn talent. I knowww. You did a very good job. Charcoal is messy, eh? Got it all over your fingers and everywhere else? I had art and we never drew people. We did the perspective thing where we drew bldgs and streets from near to far.

    very nice stuff!

ya know, no worries about self portraits - people are the hardest things to draw and it takes lots of practice to get the proportions right!
