I'm not... and that's how this post came about...

did a full system scan after my return... the scan detected a trojan horse... can't get rid of the darn thing... wanted to do a system restore, but not successful... so what did I do? I did a system recovery (which recovers the system to its factory settings) so it completely wipes out the system... EVERYTHING!!! but I knew that... so I spent the afternoon backing up my files and pictures and music and videos... all the good stuff... hahaa... but what did I forget? some mp3... and I forgot to export my bookmarks as a file which I can later use again... so all my bookmarks are GONE!!!~

so what else? unfortunately my CD/DVD-rom is not reading any discs I put in... it did it for two but now it's not reading a darn thing... so why is that bad? I can't "re-install" my Adobe programs like Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, Dreamweaver, Flash, and all the money-making programs that I will need... so what am I in the process of doing right now? HA!! you won't believe it... I'm actually putting my laptop and portable hard drive to use... I'm extracting the CD files onto my portable hard drive... and from there I connect the portable hard drive to my desktop to start the setup.exe  yea... not a very fun process... been trying to figure something out for the whole evening...

so any computer genius out there wanna help me out here? any solutions or suggestions? are the external DVD drives the same? maybe I need to get one of those?

Ouch.  A system recovery?  Is that HP's system recovery or Microsoft windows?  Because a MS system recovery only blows away the registry while HP... I think it blows the whole OS away.  In either cases the licenses for programs like Photoshop and Illustrator are stored in the registry which means the safest way to get the program back is through reinstallation.    I have bought some hard drives which come with extra copies of Photoshop LE, but it might not have enough tools for you to do what you need to do easily.
I'd have to hunt them down.

I suppose you got things back in order by now though.  If not, just hit me up and I'll take a look.

That stinks.  At least you were able to back up before the virus got to any of your files.  You can probably replace your CD/DVD drive if you don't want to hook up to an external one on a permanent basis.  Once you're set up again, you should hook up an external hard drive to you computer and back up periodically to protect against something like this in the future.

Yikes!!. Not good, I wish I could help, does that mean the trojan has damaged the CD/DVD-rom. I hope you don't have to end up taking it to a computer expert to get it fixed.

wow that seems like such a problem ~~ External CD Drives are quite cheap and they work the same as internal ones - you'll just have an extra thing to plug into your USB!    I got a pretty good one for $40 and that was almost a year ago - so it should be much cheaper now.

I have to do a system recovery too ~ i have a WMI control corruption >_<  I've been putting it off though haha since I'm too lazy to backup all my crap.

External DVD drives the same as what?... the same as internal ones?  If that's the questions, then yes...  External HDs are also cheap now and pretty good for storing data (so no need to burn files out)  Western Digital (WD) is a good brand for that and I think they sell them at Costco for cheap.

I know it's too late now but in the future, if you get a trojan or any other virus, the best thing to do is to look up the virus on any anti-virus software site and find the solution...  also, having a good anti-virus software installed on your machine is a good idea :)  This will save you grief from having to 'reset' your hard drive.
