A friend forwarded this little NY Times blog to me at work today and I just thought it was kinda interesting. I think this list of good manners and behavīors should apply to everyone, not just Chinese people. Has anyone been to a football game lately or have a pushy mom cut in front of you at Disneyland?

The Olympics Are Coming, It’s Time to Behave

Ever consider using a national flag as a seat cushion? Or holler and whistle and make other unruly noises? Letting loose your inner demon on the Web? These are just some of the no-nos put out by Xinhua Web site in anticipation of the Olympics.

In a series of essays, the state news agency offers a list of good manners and behavīors for the Chinese people. According to Xinhua:

奥运将临，无数中国人怀着兴奋的心情期待着这一盛会，都希望能为奥运出一份力, 为国争一份光。可是，一些国人的不文明行为，实在令人担忧。新华网评选取十种比较典型的社会现象，进行点评。希望每一个中国人都能成为文明的奥运东道主，让奥运带来中华文明的新高度。

Here’s a translation:

The Olympics are coming. Countless Chinese people are waiting with eagerness and excitement for this grand gathering. Everyone hopes to contribute to the Olympic effort and help China win glory. However, there are some uncivilized behavīors of Chinese people that are real causes for concern. We have selected 10 typical phenomena to comment on. Let’s hope that every Chinese can become a civilized host, and the Olympics will elevate Chinese civilization to a new height.

The list, in headlines, reads as follows:

With 40 days to go, will the Chinese people be able to modify their behavīors in time? And really, how hard is it to stand in line in a civilized way?

i remember my trip to BJ!!!! they REALLY need to improve their social etiquette... =/

I say people all around the world need to behave better. Not just during some international sporting event. Totally agree.

Super straight forward and blunt. I'm the friend that tells you that you look like sh*t at the end of a long day at work (and then I help you fix your hair). I can be pretty intimidating, but everyone around me knows that I'm one of the nicest people they'll ever meet. I can talk to anyone, anywhere, on just about anything that comes to my mind at the moment. I'm a Cancer so I can get along with practically anyone. At this moment in life, I can say that the smartest decision I ever made was to study abroad in Hong Kong, where all I did was shop, eat, party, and travel for a year (but don't tell my parents that). I'm super addicted to girly books (I love Sophie Kinsella) and was recently tricked into reading my first romance novel(it's like porn on books). I truly believe that I am destined to be a photographer, food critic, or an event planner, but somehow landed in banking and finance. I'm an impulsive shopper (last year I bought a PSP and now it's just sitting on my book shelf). I have a passion for food and I love trying new restaurants. I once told a friend "if we weren't working together we would never be friends because you can't eat garlic." My friends appreciate food. For some odd reason (I still haven't figured out what) I have the shortest attention span when it comes to the guys I date. I can be staring at my cell phone when it rings, but I'll never pick it up. I'm addicted to buying Chinese DVDs. I'm allergic to lychee, but I eat it anyways. I can't stand pretentious people, I rather respect you for your b*tchy a**hole selves. I learned how to read and speak Mandarin by watching tv. I once told a Congressmen to get off my seat at a conference in capitol hill. I'm not on facebook.

Update 8/17/2007...just kidding...I'm on facebook now.
