A blurry image of the TV screens at the pub last night. They had I think 4 flat-screens and a projector, not bad for one room!
Usually local pubs here show afternoon sports, but yesterday the Irish pub I was in was full of eager punters watching another competition: the Australian election. I put in my two cents at the booths a few days earlier, and got a chuckle out of the fact that one of the parties even had a guy handing out "how to choose us and not screw up your form" flyers outside the booths (did they fly him in perhaps?). Last night was a mammoth show: started watching the telecast around 3:30pm, as the results started to be counted. Early on it looked like the swing to the left may not be all that big, but by 9pm it was another story! The bar was offering discount Australian beer (25 kuai for Boags, quite a deal), which kept the packed house happy, and when Howard finally conceded many hours and just as many drinks later, one generous patron (or was it the house who did it?), shouted the entire bar to champagne! Strangers then went from table to table pouring up your glass when you looked close to finishing. Quite a boisterous night! As if that wasn't enough, I then went home and opened a South Australian wine I've been keeping on the shelf for 5 years (and shipped up here in my luggage!); didn't remotely get through it, but it's the thought that counts :)
