I've lived in a house all my life but lately I was wondering if a town house or apartment would be better.  I've noticed that people tend to go for townhouses or apartments instead of houses these days.  So far this is what I came up with:

    Pros  - Townhouse/Apt. :  Security

Cons - Townhouse/Apt. : Monthly maintenance fee, limited/no yard space, lack of privacy.

The pros and cons for house would be the reverse of the above.

I'm stuck and can only think of one pro for the townhouse/apt!  I'm sure there's more but I can't think of any right now.  Anyone have any thoughts on this?

I like apartments, but for me it's because living in a large house on my own just feels very lonely and too big., the pro's are low maintenance and security. but cons include lack of garden, non-soundproof walls, the thought that if a fire in the flat next door breaks out, that it can effect you too, or if the next door neighbour is unware of hazards, overloading plugs etc, which of course an accident could damage your apartment too.(alaway plays on my mind)

Pro for living in an apt: low maintenance (e.g. no need to mow the lawn yourself) as you'd need to pay for it. Personally I prefer living in a house as I have a kid so she likes playing in the garden. Townhouses in UK are mostly 3 storey so not practical when you have babies/small children.

i've lived in all 3... i think a townhouse/ house is good for raising kids. great space. my mom loves living in houses (so bad that we had to move around 3 times in 4 years before we found another house to live in) =)
but for singles/ newly weds, i would prefer a condo!
pros for condos: no need to shovel the snow or mow the lawn or take care of the yard, maintenance is paid for so no need to "fix up" things on your own, less space = less time to clean up and more time to enjoy life!

I live in a town house, I've never lived in house before. Before, I use to live in an apartment in the city. Living in a townhouse, is practically like living in a house, but a small house and that your neighbours are practically 'wall to wall' with you.

living in a apt and a house at the same time...so I commute during the weekends back and forth...

    Apt
Pro: have everything fixed out of the managers pocket

Con: privacy, I can hear my neighbors banging each other...it's not fun and I wont be able to get back to sleep once I'm awaken..so darn...lol, rules and policies to follow. Share a washer and dryer with others, parking is limited, people living in your apt is limited, visitors can be limited, the manager needs to know if there are people staying over more then 2 days, cable tv or satelite dish is not allowed with ever one they have, people comming around to bug the crap out of you, etc...

Yes you need to pay a monthly fee and yes along with utilities, but that's not as much as your monthly mortage payments are for owning a house. That is only if you don't plan to move and that you've good finances to support your self then a house would be a better option. Plus you probably have your car bills and phone bills etc pilling up somewhere, those need to be paid too. So with that, are you able to pay monthly mortage along with everything else for a house?

    House:
Pro: Privacy, more space to move around in, no specific rules or policies to follow

Con: everything comes out of your pocket. Repairs, maintaince, etc...

Really need to calculate the benefits over the cost. If your benefits exceeds your costs then go for whichever one it is. If it's the other way around...don't go there. You may find your self in debt pretty quickly.

I think location is also something you would want to take into account also.  There's a lot of responsibility involved in taking care of a house which you may not want to deal with and also it would be harder to clean.  It may be easier at your age to do the townhouse/apt thing for now and save the house for later.  That's just my opinion.

    My comment is for houses.
I'm young and I go for houses. Sure, the yard is a bitch but I don't have to do anything bc the husband takes care of it. haha.

    [cons - house]
    - i think unless i can afford to hire a maid, i wouldn't move into a house.  Cleaning a house is much more time-consuming due to its space, and it's not like i need all that space.
    - u have to be responsible for fixing anything that breaks

    [pros - condo/townhouse]
    - NO maintenance fee.  Anything breaks?  Call the property mgmt and they fix it for u.
    - Convenient location, suitable for ppl who love city life (or the party animals).  No need to drive, environmental friendly.
    - Easy to move out when needed.

    [cons - condo/townhouse]
    - may not have ur own washing machine  =P
    - annoying / insensitive neighbors can give u headaches
    - pet policy

In terms of privacy... i don't think it's a problem.  I have no idea what my neighbors are doing, except when they're holding big parties.  So, i think they don't know what i'm doing neither.

    pro: space, privacy, quieter
con: if you're renting - responsible for own utilities, yard maintenance
con: if you own - yard maintenance, responsible for own repairs and appliances, homeowners association fee, property taxes,
