Thanks to everyone for the comments on my previous post.  You're all so kind.  I'm feeling better now.   Thanks again!

Being single is not easy when you're surrounded by married friends.

Alright, I guess I should explain that generalization.  I remember reading a post some time ago about being single.  Just thought I'd share my experience on that.   A lot of my friends and relatives have gotten married recently and some have already started a family.  I guess we're at that age where we're working on our careers, settling down and moving forward.  Now whenever I go to family dinners or casual events, at some point in time the inevitable question always pops up.... "So when are you getting married?".  I'm thinking in my mind, how can I think of marriage when I'm not even in a serious relationship?!!    I never really know how to respond when people ask me this.... I usually just smile and try to respond as politely as possible, but it gets really annoying after a while.  Usually after I answer, I'll try steer the conversation in a different direction.  Most people go along with that but some.... *to my uttermost horror and embarrassment!!!*... proceed to try to set me up with people who might be "right" for me.  I know they mean well but it's really embarrassing!  This has happened so many times, it has lost all its amusing, funny factor.

Then there's the matter of the bride's bouquet toss at weddings.  I usually don't go for the bouquet toss but several times, instead of blending in with the crowd... my name was being called out on stage (LOUD and CLEAR I might add) to go join in the toss.  I actually caught the bouquet once.  But I wrote it off as a fluke because all the others beside me scattered away when the bouquet was heading in our direction.  It literally plopped in my hands.   So yeah, it's situations like these that makes it hard being single.  Married folks don't have to go through these situations anymore.  Lucky them!!

I know it's not easy. It's alway the "marriage" questions...then it's the "baby" questions...People just can't leave it alone enough. Some don't mean harm by it...but you're right! It's annoying!!! Next time, just fake a cell phone call and walk away. ;)

Unfortunately you'll probably always get the question as long as you're single but there are benefits to both.  Marriage is not something that is right for everyone and definitely not something to be rushed into.  Don't let it get to you - what does it matter as long as you're happy :)

Oh yeah I look so forward to family get togethers to hear the words 'Oh you are still single, you can't leave it too late', it's really quite depressing, and my friends are always trying to fit me up with guys. I feel like I'm being crucified because I'm 27 and still single with no kids!!

hmm, I'm one of these people who is usually single.  If that were me I would just answer "when I'm ready".   (though I'm thinking, I'm not sure marriage is for me)

    I agree with Pongza

Why do people think that being married or with someone is the only way to live? Tell them that if Mr. Right comes along, so be it, if he doesn't oh well you're still going to live your life because you can be whole without being married.

"Being single is not easy when you're surrounded by married friends."  I couldn't agree with you more!  It's a very lonely feeling.  One of the loneliest.

There's always going to be people asking... it's whether they really care about you and have good intentions, or they're asking just to be nosy and annoying, that's the difference.

Try not to let it get to you. For the nosy ppl, you should start asking "annoying" questions back... like "when are YOU getting married?" (if they're dating), "when are you having kids?" (if they're married), "when are you having your next kid?", etc... =P

Can't say I was every in your position. I was w/ someone when I was 19 on.

Being married and childless is a whole 'nother subject that's pretty similar. The 2nd or 3rd question from acquaintances, friends and strangers is about having children. Like it was any of their business. I usually come back w/ a coy answer or wisecrack or shrug it off, depending on my mood.

You know, I think, for the most part, these people really think they're helping, not humiliating, you. It's those people who degrade you bc of your single status e.g. is there something wrong with you that you're still single, or, you're single because you have a bad personality or you're hard to get along with, etc. I think you feel most upset and sensitive at these times bc you yourself aren't happy about your single status.

you know what... i've come to realize that people will ALWAYS be nosy (or express care in the wrong way). when you're single, they ask when you'll get a bf/ get married; when you're married, they'll ask when you have kids... why not ask them back next time, "SO WHEN ARE YOU RETIRING?"... that will definitely put a stop to those stupid questions. obviously, when you get married, you'll get married. i guess a more polite way would be to reply, "no worries. i will definitely let you know what i decide to get married/ find a bf/ etc."

I don' tknow how so many people associate happiness with marriage. It's like the most important thing in life to them is marriage. But marriage doesn't give people happiness, I've seen bad relationships. When I mean bad, I mean bad.

So yes, I do know what you mean by annoyance.

Marriage isn't something that should be forced upon people, in fact it's actually rude, because people have the freedom of choice. Don't fall for peer pressure sweetie.

oh..thanks for clearing that up with me. ;)
