I'm going into my fourth year of bowling; and before I started bowling, I didn't realize there can be so much to learn in bowling: different things to help perfect the game... things like
    - the type of ball you use
    - the lane condition (meaning the oil pattern on the lane; ranging from low oil - heavy oil)
    - your foot approach (how fast / slow you walk up to throw the ball, or even how many steps you take before releasing the ball)
    - the way you hold the ball
    - where you are standing on the approach (before throwing the ball)
    - the type of lane (wood lanes vs. synthetic lanes)
    - and many others...

But it really depends on what ball to use for the different conditions:

Those aren't all mine... actually only 4 of them are mine... hahaa... the rest is my mom and her bf's... hehee... Here is what I own...

    Storm Big Hit   Storm SuperCharge
     Storm Banshee
    Storm Paradigm*
    Hammer Hawg Zilla*

    *The two main bowling balls that I use;
The Storm SuperCharge, Banshee, and Paradigm all have scents in it... YEP! The SuperCharge is an orange smell, Banshee is a Pina Colada smell, the Paradigm is grape smell... pretty cool, eh?

The first ball I had was the Big Hit... it was a 12-pound ball... when they told me it was 12-lbs, I was WHAT?! I can't bowl a 12-lb ball... but actually when you get a ball fitted to your hand, it actually doesn't feel like it's heavy... usually the finger holes on the house balls are bigger, so we have to use the strength on our fingers to grip onto the ball, but when it's fitted, the weight is equally distributed on the hand, so it doesn't seem that heavy. Then after the first year, I switched to 13-lb... I needed more weight to take down all the pins... haha...  I actually tried going right into using a 14-lb ball, but it wasn't working very well, cause it was bit too heavy and I end up just dropping the ball... (my mom uses 15-lbs ... crazy! haha... )

And before getting my first ball, my foot approach wasn't "correct." I did small steps... then after getting my first ball, I learned to just walk like I would normally walk... hahaa... (it was like learning to walk all over again) but this time my hands and legs had to coordinated, otherwise... not good... I take 5 steps, on the last step, I slide to give more energy to my hand swing to throw the ball out...

My mom and I have similar bowling styles. People call us the "Back-up bowlers" but we like to call ourselves "Reverse-hook bowlers" hahaa...  What does that mean? it means that we are right-hand bowlers, but our ball is released like a left-hander... This is how a "normal" bowler's ball will roll into the pins...

but our ball rolls in on the other side... this is b/c of the way our hand is when we release the ball... when people are watching, they'd think we're breaking our wrists... but actually we're not, of course... here's a picture that compares the "normal" hand on the ball and the back-up way...

See how the wrist is turned? yea, kinda weird... so here's a video of how my ball hooks... (just imagine as if it was a full rack of pins... hehee... )

    Video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oUMjbqbzL1Q

have I bored you with my bowling talk?  yea, I never knew there was so much to bowling... I'm still learning... so here are just a few more things that I've learned...
    - When there is heavy oil on the lane, the ball is less likely to hook as much; so if there is low oil, the ball will hook a lot more
    - For wood lanes, the ball hook is slower; whereas on synthetic lane, the ball will hook sooner (so there is adjustments to make according to where you stand on the approach)
    - When aiming for where to release the ball and where you want the ball to roll, we don't look at the pins, we look at the dots on the approach and the arrows on the lane

And what determines how the ball will hook or how much it will hook? it depends on the weight block of the ball... here's the inside of a bowling ball...

that's the inside of my Paradigm ball... all balls have a different type of weight block, some are made to hook less and some are made to hook more... so that's why people have so many bowling balls... hahaa... House Balls and Spare Balls are plastic balls, they don't have weight blocks, so they don't hook, unless you force it to...

okay, enough of my bowling talk... hahaa... so Let's Go Bowling!!

So like a true unprofessional I will say, I like the storm Big Hit, it's pretty :)

i love bowling too. i bowled a lot during part of high school and in college, i wasn't very good but i still enjoyed it. =)

i have a very specific foot approach too... i take 5 steps and i must take the first step with my left foot. if i don't, i feel thrown off and things just aren't right. haha

sometimes i'll start with a "heavier" ball, like 12 lbs, and then use a lighter one to pick up the spares.... but then again i haven't bowled in so long, i'm all off! =P

That's a very nice collection of bowling balls. I didn't know there were scented bowling balls.... very cool and pretty.  =)

I've only went bowling once in my entire life.... haha.  But it's fun, I want to go again.  Unfortunately there's no bowling here so I have to wait until I travel.  ^_^

Veddy interesting. I didn't learn about the inside of the ball in my bowling class in college. I know about the oil, markings, twisting, and the release.  As a congratulatory gift, the teacher gave us pins sawed in half. I never got one though. haha.

I usually go for a 12-pound ball. I hate the stock balls who's holes are too big or too small. And I usually develop a blister or pain on one of my fingers when I bowl. I must be holding it wrong or the fit isn't good. I release the ball as shown in pic #1. Most of the time my ball goes straight down the lane but that might be bc I'm using those awful bowling alley balls.

Your next blog should be about your bowling shoes. ;D They have some pretty nice styles, yes?

I like to bowl but unfortunately I'm not very good at it.  I'm impressed with your collection of bowling balls.  The Storm SuperCharge is pretty.  It's cool how they have different names and scents.  Your Mom must be strong to wield that 15 lb. ball.  I bet no one messes with her :P

Bowling like any other sport requires certain equipment and conditions in place for success - that makes sense!

oh wow... so much to it. i'm not a hard core bowler so i would just pick up a light-weight 3lbs, look at the arrows on the lane then look at the pins and take a few steps toward it and would just release it. not bad...hehee
