  • An afternoon at the cinema

I understand the hype about Lust, Caution.

Went to see it on Sunday at the Landmark at Embarcadero Center. This is a little cinema with only a few screens. The show to which I arrived a few minutes late was nearly sold out - only 15 seats available in the theater of 162. Was forced to sit front and center but wasn't too bad because the screen was smaller and I managed to slouch so as to rest my head on the chair's back.

I didn't know what to expect, besides the explicit sex scenes. I think Tang Wei is a wonderful actress and singer and everyone performed nearly as well. This film was like Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon and Brokeback Mountain in terms of pacing and restrained emotions where the characters conceal their true emotions for want of propriety, social mores or deception.

The sex scenes were certainly graphic. But even so, they weren't unnecessarily drawn out and it does show the changing dynamics between Mak Tai Tai and Mr. Yee as their relationship progresses. Where he was once domineering and rough (as if to hide his true self), he becomes less so while she becomes more equal and trusted. We see that he later feels comfortable enough with her, to let his guard down, to be able to show his vulnerability.

Mak Tai Tai, on the other hand, is losing herself in her duty to win his trust.

I won't say much about the naked, hairy bodies I saw or mention that someone is dark in places I hadn't imagined.

The film kept my interest most of the time. I believe the only times I became impatient were when my back was aching from slouching in the front row seat.

    The bathrooms needed some attention.

The FTG showtimes become available some time today.

I think all the hype and attention over the sex scenes has probably overshadowed the movie itself.  I read that Ang Lee actually said that he thought that movie was quite "Chinese" in it's pacing and delivery of the story.  What did you think of Lee Hom Wang's performance in the film.  I've heard his acting has improved.   I think he and DW bear somewhat of a resemblance to one another.  I want to go see this when I feel up to it.

Glad you enjoyed the movie, I did. Though I didn't like all those sex scenes, but it does show how the characters develop. Oh, and Leehom Wang was HOT! Haha ... he was Kuang Yu Min (I think that's how to spell it). Leehom's acting is top notch!!!

You are so lucky. We get the Ang-Lee's China 147mins version, because of greedy distributors aiming for a lower rating, so as to pull in younger audience. With that in mind, I will not watch it, till the unedited original is screened or do a dvd release.

Funny, but most the drama in my real life never occurred during the "sex scenes".  It was the rest of the time.  I'll see anything Ang Lee attempts so I can't wait to see this one.

Everyone seems to be talking about Lust,Caution, admittedly at first I was a bit down on going to see it, as I heard their was a lot of sex, but, everyone who has been says it's not as if the scenes are unecessary, or overlong so I must give the story a chance. Thanks for letting us know about it.

I agree about Tang Wei's acting and the restrained emotions. Actually, what I thought was most interesting about the film was that the violence and sex had an objectivity to them that was unusual for a Chinese film - for example, when they talk about the killing scene in Saving Private Ryan being really objective and not all glamourized, just gross, that's exactly what this film achieved. I think Ang Lee is smart to do the things in America that can't really be done in China...

I was somewhat skeptical about why they kept 麥太太 translated in the subtitles as "Mak Tai Tai".  Wouldn't it be simpler if they had it as "Mrs. Mak"?  It's obviously the same thing and it carries the same meaning.

By the way, was I right about the sudden "whoa" with the diamond ring?  Did everyone in the theatre room do that on the screening you attended?
