so my dress-trying experience wasn't so great... my friend (Laura) and I went to David's Bridal in Colma... my friend's been there before... to try on her wedding gowns... and one other bridesmaid has been there before too...

but anyway... this is of course a whole new experience for me... I mean, I've only been to one wedding... been to numerous banquets, but I guess that's different from weddings... hehee... I was supposed to look through a catalog and the lady would bring me the dresses in my size... so basically the style dresses they didn't have in my size for the color... so of 4 dresses I tried on today... only 1 was in the color scheme that Laura wanted... and I thought it was weird that the dressing rooms didn't have mirrors in it... I was trying to zip up the dress, but had a hard time b/c I couldn't see if I was zipping up part of the dress or not... so I wasn't too happy with it... the one that I really wanted to try on... they didn't have my size... but as we were walking outta there... I went to look through the racks and found the dress in my size, but a different color... I could have tried it on just to see... since nothing else I tried on was the right color anyways...

err... I wanna try another place now... it seemed like that lady didn't really want to help me... and she kinda laughing at me for wearing a bra with a tube dress... yea... it was embarrassing, but I didn't want to take off my bra to try on the dress..

anyway... I still have a lot to learn about all this wedding stuff... turns out the wedding traditions are quite different for the american style weddings... turns out that the bridesmaid buy their own dresses (one of her bridesmaid bought a $300+ dress already), the groom doesn't see the wedding gown until the day of the wedding otherwise it's bad luck, all the girls in the wedding gets their own bouquet (??) and it seems that since the groom can't see the gown until the day of... they don't take studio pictures... cause when I asked Laura if she's gonna take studio pictures... she gave me the blank look...

do you guys know of any other traditions that I should know of so I don't make a fool of myself? and places to shop for bridesmaid dresses? not too expensive... I think $200 with tax is max for me... (unless it's really really really really pretty....)

(UPDATE: The colors on the dresses at these links are not the colors that we are going with... no bright colors... hehee... something more subtle, some shades of blue or the lilac colors... kinda like the picture below... I'd pick orange colors, but ehh... it's not my wedding... hahaa... )

here are the dresses that I tried on today:

    dress# 1

    dress# 2

    dress# 3

    dress# 4

the one that I really wanted to try on was this one and this one

this is what Laura wants for the colors... not necessarily the styles...

(Laura's big day is July 2008, do you think I should seriously look now? or can I wait a little longer? err...)

I bought my wedding dress and bridesmaid dresses from Trudys in Campbell:

    http://www.trudysbrides.com/index.html

I remember going to David's Bridal to check out the selection there but the customer service was lousy.  On the other hand, Trudys is great.

As far as wedding traditions go, we did not really follow any other than the tea ceremony with the groom's side of the family before the banquet.

Last, I paid for all my bridesmaids' dresses, shoes and bouquets.  Granted, I only had 2 bridesmaids...

Hope this helps!  Good luck and show us the dress that makes the final cut!  =)

    Hi Jane~
I bought my bridesmaid's dress at the unique bride in Burlingame.  They have a HUGE selection of bridesmaids' dresses.  You do need to start looking now.  I know it's customary for bridesmaids to pay for their own dresses, but I didn't know they're suppose to pay for their own bouquet...  I paid for my bridesmaid's dress (vera wang but only $215 at unique bride) and of course I'm paying for her bouquet too!  Hmm...If I can give one suggestion, choose something that fits you best, or else you'll have to fork out alterations too! (for a dress you might never wear again!)  Feel free to email me if u have any other questions!  good luck!

In my last wedding, we all bought this dress http://www.jcrew.com/catalog/product.jhtml?id=prod62983281&catId=cat230173 since they make in in a Tall and Petite size.  I would suggest looking at those or Ann Taylor so that you could wear them again in the future.

you should start looking now... if there are more than 1 bridesmaid, make sure you know what the bride wants! when i was a bridesmaid, there were 3 OTHER gals and we each had to basically buy the same dress for ONE day. (headaches trying to agree on ONE style of dress)... mine's currently for sale on craigslist!!!
hmmm. yeah, american/ cdn traditions are totally different than chinese. you should expect to pay for your hair/ makeup/ manicures as well. for me, i plan on buying everything for my MOH... but then again, i'm quite FOBBY. hahaha...

I think Ivy presents a good case. *thumbs up*

Otherwise for the dresses, I do like 1-2 and the first one you wanted. But I'd really go easy on the brightness(color) of the dress. For me, darker is better than too light.

Do some more shopping around, I'm sure there are some really fabulous ones out there just waiting for your picking. :)

I'll come back with some websites...hehe

Hey, that's a great color scheme.

How much time do you have? You can always have your dress made. Lots of seamstresses out there. If not, there's one lady in San Jose who does a fantastic and inexpensive job, like she did for my bridesmaid dresses.
I know of those traditions your friend's following. However, I did take pics before the wedding but also took a ton the day of the wedding. Guests even left the reception cos we were taking so long. haha.

Tis the season for school dances...check out the collections on major retailers. They're usually a lot cheaper than bridal shops too. Now is the time to shop though...don't wait a few months cuz things will be picked over quick!

I like the strapless a line one from the first link of the ones you wanted to try on,it's a beautiful colour and shape. I also like the last one of the ones you tried, the blue is so rich, stunning colour.
i wish I could help with traditions, but that's one reason I forgo being maid of honour to a friend, so many traditions that I just knew I would go wrong somewhere.
Good Luck in finding your dress.

I ordered my bridesmaids dresses for my wedding through an online dealer. You try on the dresses you want beforehand at a store, then order online the exact dress, model #, size, and color that you want, and they'll ship it to you. It costs so much less than buying it at a dress shop. Dresses are in perfect quality, brand new, totally legit.

My bridesmaid dresses costed $105 each online. I think it was around $170-200 in the stores.
