Beowulf and my English teacher

"Beowulf" cannot be extricated from my brain. My English teacher in junior high school talked constantly about this poem, as well as, works from scores of other English writers. Thank gawd I didn't have to study the poem with all its symbolism, themes, allegories, metaphors, etc.

Ms. Baker clearly majored in English literature and was an anglophile. I don't recall having studied any American writers or poets during my time under her tutelage (she later followed me and became a part of the faculty at my senior high school).

It was odd how Ms. Baker's class focused on literature whereas the other junior high English classes were immersed in the study of (boring) grammar and writing. I lucked out, or maybe there are those who feel I could have benefited from more instruction on writing and correct grammar?

And thanks to Ms. Baker, I developed the desire to go to England as soon as I financially could. I recall how our study of Thomas Hardy's Tess of the d'Ubervilles in ninth grade made me want to visit Stonehenge. And all that in-depth study of works by Shakespeare and Charles Dickens only added to my fascination with London and the English countryside.

I wuz there.

There's a feature film based on "Beowulf" to be released November 16 (in the States) from Paramount. It stars that guy from "300." It looks to promise some fantasmic fun.

that guy (all the guys >_~) from 300 is (are) hot =)

Eek, I don't remember too much, I remember studing English and NZ writers and poets not sure if we studied anybody else.

I didn't study any literature until freshmen year of high school. I remember studying Beowolf and all it's allegories, metaphors, and symbolism in my world literature class. I'm really excited about the movie coming out.

I actually liked grammar. During junior year in high school, my English teacher gave a pretest before each lesson. If you passed it, you didn't have to do any of the assignments. Needless to say, that class was quite a breeze for me. =P

Ya hadda say the word 'Beowulf' & give me total flashbacks to studying it in mucho. j/k! I had a double major in college & one of them was English. I much preferred the literature side of it to the grammar, etc. I feel I never have nailed down the nuances of grammar & punctuation, yet I like to express myself in writing. I like your style of writing & think you express yourself very well. I've heard good things about the Beowulf film as well.

We have a different class for English grammar & literature.
Is Tess of the d'Ubervilles a good read? I bought a book on it years ago but didn’t even bother to read it until now. Lol.

I didn't have to read to read it in school. Saw the trailer a while back. The animation really captured the true looks of the actors.

I've lived in England all my life, and have yet to visit StoneHenge! I'm so ashamed. Also we never even studied Beowulf in English class, terrible to not read such classics in school. Film adaptation looks rather good

I never read Beowulf or Tess, guess I never had an interest besides being able to reference it like the nerd that I am....yes, my classmates and I were huge nerds, Borders was the cool place to hang out, and having new versions of the classics meant you were even cooler....LOL no wonder people think I'm weird...

In high school, I mostly read Shakespeare and West Indian novels. Now years later, I'm more interested in it than I was then.

The movie preview looks interesting... will look out for it. =)
