  • Finishing the Game review

Not that unfavorable reviews ever deterred us from seeing a film, I came across this in my Entertainment Weekly (
the one with Gollum on the cover) where the reviewer didn't particularly like or, probably more accurately, didn't GET the film.

"Director Justin Lin had the good idea of making a movie about the search for an actor to replace Bruce Lee after he died, in 1973, partway through the shooting of Game of Death. Lin then had the very bad idea to stage Finishing the Game as a broad mockumentary, full of tiresomely exaggerated, vainly leering actors with names like Breeze Loo and Troy Poon; they make the contestants on your average reality-dating show look droll. The film completely misses what should have been its real target — the filming of Game of Death, a martial-arts campfest worthy of Edward D. Wood Jr. D"

I'm still going to try to check it out two weekends from now. Gotta support our own.

Critics have never influenced my decision with films, I still remember how when Shawshank Redemption came out, it was loathed and after the DVD release, it suddenly became a classic in their eyes. It seems to me that the reviewer thought he was going see a documentary of Bruce's final steps and how the Game was finished rather then an actually spoof comedy. He sounds stuck in the 70's....I'd leave him there!
I hope you will enjoy the film when you see it.

for me, some movie are worth 'review', and some is just for entertainment purpose.

reviewer SHOULD NOT view all movie in the same category.

still, i don't get influence by reviewer for movie i wanted to watch. i didn't even see anything of The Departed. i even hated it when it won Oscars. (unfair)

actually I thought Flagday very eloquently summed up my thoughts.

Seems like the critic missed the point, obviously he had different expectations of the film.

I review will only put me off if I have doubts about a film anyway.

The only time I let a review stop me from watching a movie is if I actually didn't want to watch the movie.

nope... reviews will never stop me from watching a film... I feel like film critics have a very special mind... and usually what they say isn't that great is usually pretty darn good in my books... hahaa... =)

Even though I read these reviews, I will still watch the film and make the decision for myself whether I think it's good or not. :)

Well, I think to enjoy it, you do have to be in tune with the way As Am's feel about certain things. In that sense it may be too specific for certain audiences. It's definitely not gonna be the "universal, classic, timeless" film.

I thought it was pretty damn funny!

Now....I liked "Ballistic: Ecks vs. Sever "....critics buried that deep. Maybe it's that I liked Lucy Liu.
