I think there is inequity and there is still a need for feminism.  In the PSA (Public Sector Union) mag there was a picture of two kids, a brother and a sister.  The caption read, "Prepare you daughter for the real world, pay her less pocket money than her brother".  The small print went on to say that after 30 years of legislation to try and fix this we still havent.  THough things are certainly better than they were 20-30 years ago.  In NZ only 7% of board directors are female.  The public sector is more balanced.   It is hard to prove though because it isnt polite to discuss the salary of others and one doesn't know why somebody may be given a training opportunity that someone else misses out on (bosses don't generally list the reasons).

You're so sweet to warn me about the the rock music on your page.   Fortunately I was able to come directly to this entry w/o going to your main page.  

While I think women have come a long way, some degree of inequality still exists between men and women.   I work at a company that is male dominated up top.  A "boys club" mentality definitely exists.  All the executives who are hired just happen to be male.  Their assistants all happen to be female. My boss seems to only value the opinion of certain people who ironically are all male.  He also refers to women as racks.

I think to make for an interesting paper you can do two things.  

1)  Find non-generic and specific examples.

2)  Explore the subject from the opposite angle and work your way backwards.  Meaning - make the "other" assumption.  Let's say that women have the advantage and see where that takes you in your research.

As a paper it would probably be most interesting if you can find a unique way of looking at the situation.  Have you ever read the book freakonomics?  If not - I highly recommmend it for an example of what I'm talking about - how if you really explore all the facts with no agenda sometimes your conclusions are quite interesting.

Or maybe you could approach from the idea of is "equality" even feasible and where does it end?  Certainly some men raise up the ranks because their handsome and charming.  Some men will raise up the ranks because they have the same habbits (sports, drugs, who knows) as the people above them and so the people above them want them to hang out with them more.  That is also where the "boy's club" mentality comes in which I think the feminist movement in the work place was trying to fight starting in the 50's.  But, interestingly enough, the assumption there is that by being male, you automatically fit into the boy's club.  And that's just not true.  Plenty of men didn't share the same habbits and despite their work, they might not  fit in and therefore not get promoted.  How do you compare them to the women who are overlooked?

You could look at companies which are heavy female in management.... how do they compare?

I'm just tossing out thoughts without any agenda other than to encourage using some research to look at your situation from a new angle.  Also - I think students often feel like they have to prove "their point" in their papers... but I think a truly advanced paper might allow you to oscillate a little bit.  Remember what I was saying in a previous blog about oscillation using the courtroom example?

I'm currently in a job where the gender scale is pretty balanced. Our CEO is female, as is half the directors. The whole senior team would probably be a little more male dominated, though. But otherwise, I see a very balanced gender scale. I have no idea how much they get paid though!

I haven't had too much of a problem with males having more power over females - mostly cos I don't want to have to do the work! I wanna just stay at home and watch tv all day and leave the man to bring home the bacon! Haha! Nah, I'm pretty traditional, aye, so I don't really have a huge problem with it.

Yes, we are still unequal, but I'm no feminist.

uh oh... being a female myself, I feel like I should have a better say on these topics... O__o but I feel like I'm at a lost of words...

I think the male vs female thing has equal out a lot from the past when there were so many things that were classified to men only things... but the differences still exist...

let's see... in the bowling "world" of things... just last year it was approved that women is qualified to bowl in the same tournaments as the men... for the longest time there were two organizations... one for the men and one for the women... and finally they are broadcasting the professional women bowlers on tv...

not too sure how much help I'm gonna be here... but I think in general men and women are pretty equal now... *shrugs*

I think males and females are still unequal. I can't think of an example right now...but I'll tell you when I think of one.
