  • Dear Spain: You F@#$ed Up

Without rehashing the issue, let me say that this ignorant photo will have very serious repercussions.

Like many of us, I am not shocked so much at the content of it, but that such things happen in 2008. I could have sworn Spain was part of the 21st century too.

Know why these guys are laughing?

Because they can't wait to get on the court with people they may very understandably consider unforgivably racist.

Unsurprisingly, most African Americans are pretty sensitive to stuff like that.

They also happen to be the vast majority of the greatest basketball players in the world.

Spain managed a minor miracle; they made Olympic basketball even more personal than it already was for the US team.

The fact that the coach treats it like no big deal just adds fuel to the fire.

This is going to be fun to watch.

After the trouncing, after the last whistle, I hope at least one American does the eye gag to a Spanish player but doesn't smile.

He'd very likely quote Eddie Murphy: "Ha ha very funny, motherf@#$er."

I think it would be funny if the Chinese team came to watch the game, all dressed like bullfighters, never cracking a smile. But that's just me.

read the spanish press about it...it doesnt get any better...
that was just small news in spain, mainly saying that we have been called racist by ONE english newspaper, and that when they asked people in beijing, they didnt know what did it mean.
So, they simply brushed the whole thing off....

    bleeeeeeeeeeeeeh...

The tennis team's newly discovered photo doesn't help... It also leads one to believe that tolerance for such things is higher than we'd like to admit.

Besides, the basketball team caught their @ss-whupping tonight as expected.

Agree with the comment immediately below mine.

The one directly accountable is the creative team / director behind the photo shoot. Whoever rolled out the concept should be hauled up on TV and asked what the hell they were thinking then made to apologise for being an idiot. You can't blame the entirety of "Spain" for something as dumb as this. Nor can you blame the basketball players. Everyone else involved in this photo shoot was either told what to do or simply being paid to produce the images. I'm sure many of the people would've questioned what they were doing, but at the same time contractually obliged to do it all the same - like it or not.

Throwing hatred back at Spain is the kind of nonsense that starts wars and I find people reactions just as dumb as the image in the first place.

Anyway. I'm middle class & white ... there isn't a single thing on Earth which anyone else can say or do to me which would cause offence ... in fact I think I'm not even allowed to get offended :)

this has a very simple and STUPID explanation...spain is not as multicultural as it wants to appear. I mean, u can find many cultures co-existing..but it started not too long ago, so some spanish people dont have this issue of what can be insulting.
For example, u still can find any comedian in spanish TV doing a very insulting imitation of a chinese guy, way worst than what happened withRosie O'donnel (was it her? I cant remember...) and people laugh and find it funny, but they never think its insulting.

This is SLOWLY getting to change, and it will change faster (I hope) as the second generation immigrants are already in  second generation pre-teenagers.

I am excusing them? no way, that was stupid, VERY stupid and racist. So...I think I am mainly trying to explain that, yes, Spain is f@cked up in this sense...but not all spaniards are =P

They didn't think it was racist or derogatory. I don't get it.

I think the US team are going to try to trounce them no matter what. What the Spain team did would upset the US bb players? Really??

WTF!?!  Somehow, I missed this story.  How ignorant can they be?  What would posses them to do something so heinous? Did they honestly think that anyone would find humor in this? Oh my!  I am so looking foward to watching them get stomped!
