DUMBO Art Festival, NYC

..seriously. hahaha!!!
found out bout this event yesterday when i get off the train and saw the poster in the station. i told myself i HAVE to check this out, and I DID TODAY! the event started Sept 28 and end tomorrow Sept 30.
started off with some 'labyrinth' hunt for open studio, but it's all worth it.
Dumbo is full with industrial bulidings that are converted into sections of studios. day was perfect for outdoor event as well. lots of artists who couldn't get studio space were placing art work on the sidewalk for viewers to view/buy. very nice environment. so alive. a great day out for me.
i only manage a few artist. some i can't take photo...*sigh* but i'll share here as much as i have!

i forget the full name of this artist, but i know his name is Alex. he's on the 6th floor of 68th Jay Street building. forget what studio number as well...but it's right off the elevator. sorry peeps...
i like his work. very 'expressive', yet some are so 'light' with little life/story. love it. i wanted to buy a t-shirt he hand painted, but i don't have enough cash with me...damn..also, the pieces i like are all in 'M' 'L' or 'XXL'... *double sigh*

he's born in New York, but parents are Japanese. his last installation give me the clue of his origin. JAPAN! hahah! tht installation is just like some godzilla scene. LOL!!! also find it interesting he use all these neon colors! adventurous! love his stuff!

this is a piece by Roger Hines, call 'Rooms of The Minds'. very VERY detail oriented piece. i can't shoot a good photo of it. but can view a little bit of them on his website www.roomsofthemind.com. it's known as assemblage-style sculptures.
before i got his postcard, i can see time is involeve in the piece as each and everyone looks like a house build base on the old 'co-co' clock (those tht has a bird pop out chirping when the clock hits the hours). i also see the 'dark side' and a very 'trouble side' with some struggling doll in it. i love the material choices use to create the piece. very thrifty and antique. i love the detail/texture those material create.

CONCEPT: (cited from his postcard)
he is inspired by his belief, that our mind is like a mansion tht contains millions of "Rooms." each one, a compilation described by our thoughts, dreams, emotions, ecstasies, angers, and secrets of our deepest selves. there is so much tht remains unseen–until we unlock the door and look inside. then, there are infinite questions to be asked.
many of the "Rooms" are somehow divided into two parts. the upper part being the higher self, ready to break free and fly away towards enlightenment–just before the stroke of the hour. the lower part represents the darker secret self tht always struggles to keep the higher self contained within the "Room", to remain eternally locked in a timeless limbo.
really captivating sculpture. this is shown at the Brooklyn Art Center...forget the exact place. but i remember the sign being orange, and it's right across from Triangle Arts.

another great spot to check out is the Fifty Five Center on 55 Washington Street. one of my friend (my Korean teacher. she meet up with me at 5pm) classmate has his work there. they call the studio STUDIO S, 6th floor, room 628. these 3 artist has GREAT PATIENCE!!!!!
i didn't manage to take photo, but do check them out if you are in DUMBO. NOT to be miss.
1- Seong Eun Hong: his pieces are oraganic shapes drawn from little lines of a 0.1 artline pen or any color pen. AMAZING PATIENCE! he name his pieces by the number of line he drew on one piece (he records down his strokes...*gasp*), and average piece, he jotted down the hour he spent on it. IMPRESSIVE!!!!!!!!! i wish he will have a site soon. oh, he also got his residency in US cause of his work of art (he's Korean). tht shows how TALENTED HE IS! i have to say, i'm going to do something like tht in my 'own' expression. I LOVE IT!
2- Soo Whan Choi: another work tht leave me in awe. his art work is call Light Art (if i remember it correctly...*sweat*). he pinch holes on his artwork on a black paper. than, he use LED lights to lid up his pinch holes art work. it is AMAZING. you have to see it yourself. the holes have different weight, and the paper is not fully stretch so it creates different light value when you view it from different angle. great great GREAT!!! those work would look perfect in a night club or some really under lid restaurant. so 'grand' and 'elegant'. another thing i would like to try myself.
i have to say, these 2 male have show some great 'delicate' side of themselves. really love it.
then down at the same building, we missed a piece tht's at the side of the elevator. it's just a simple circle with 2 mirror...but look at what it create.
IT BECOMES A VISUAL OF A WELL!!!!!!!!! SO BEAUTIFUL!!!! again, i was in awe...GREAT JOB GREAT JOB!!!! he's also Korean i believe..never really ask though. but he told me he loves mirror (didn't get his name cause it's an open installation...couldn't find no info..*sweat*)
i cannot believe it...just simple 2 piece of mirror create suce 'dramatic' visual...amazing amazing!!!

Admin Bear's cousin!!! Bubble Wrap bear!!!! again, i don't know who did it..as it was display in the lobby area...but he's CUTE for sure!!!!!!!

...so many to mention...but i'll end it here with some random stuff i saw around DUMBO. I LOVE THT PLACE! will go back visit again! i was so tired at the end...3 hrs of studio hunting...*phew* but it was a GREAT GREAT GREAT GREAT DAY!!! VERY 'CREATIVE-FUL'!!!! LOL!!!
