Thank You to everyone's response to helping a friend... you are all very good "listeners" hehee... Thank You... I have a few random things to share today...

First off... a very interesting and awesome pumpkin carving video...
    http://online.wsj.com/article/SB119375967549276362.html?mod=fpa_editors_picks
(video is towards the middle of the article..)

Morning weirdness... this morning I was awaken by my mom... but it was too early for me to wake up, so I turned the other way and went back to sleep... I was really deep in my sleep... had a dream that I took out my cell phone to call someone... then my alarm goes off on my cell phone... the weird part was that in the dream I had put my phone up to my ear after pressing send, and my cell phone goes off... and I was like, WTF? I was a little confused in my "mind" if someone was calling me or what... I think I finally realized it was my alarm going off... argh... I hate waking up like that... I feel tired today...

Before going to sleep last night, I was watching Drive of Life (TVB series)... and there was a very happy scene where the family all sat together at the table for dinner... I remembered there were a lot of happy family dinners in the beginning of Heart of Greed as well... those are always so fun to watch...

But it seems to me that not a lot of families are able to do that nowadays... my family doesn't... but we used to... I remember when my grandpa was still around... we'd gather together for dinner... I remember I used to have always say to everyone on the table "sik faan" (literally means to eat rice; but it is respect to elders to eat...) starting with my grandpa, then my grandma, my mom, etc... I used to always help set up the table too... my brother would help out sometimes...

then on Saturdays, we'd all go out to a restaurant to eat... it was always fun... I remember every Saturday we'd go to the same place (that restaurant is no longer there anymore) and my grandpa would get a bottle of Tsingtao beer... and my brother and I would get 7-Up... and we'd always ask my grandpa to pour a little bit of Tsingtao into our 7-Up... the color changes a little, (kinda like apple cider) but there was no taste of beer... or was there?  hahaa... those were the good times... on November 4th... it will be 15 years that my grandpa has passed...

he died at a rather young age... only 64... he died from a triple by-pass surgery... still remember very clearly all things that unfolded the evening of his passing... it was the first time I faced death in the family... it was pretty scary... although that memory still stays in head... in my heart is all the good times spent with my grandpa... remembering the cute white dress shoes he bought for me, the songs we used to sing together... good times...

so I'm just curious if you all sit together for family dinners? with TV on or off? hehee... just curious...

We're usually able to at least get everyone together for dinner once a week when my dad's off. Otherwise, it's just me and my mom (and sometimes my brother, too). The TV will always be on when we're eating at home because it's just too quiet without it.

Amazing pumpkin. And the cellphone dream, it's weird how noises in our reality can affect the dream we are having.

Lovely blog about family dinners and sik faan, you have sweet memories of your Grandpa and say it right, that although the bad times sometimes stick in our heard, our heart remembers the good times. Thanks Jane.

Admittedly the only family dinners we have is at Christmas, I miss the times of sitting at the table, where no tape players, TV's or magazines was allowed, and we all had a good family chat at the dinner table.

great blog!  I seem to always relate to your blogs :)
When I was young my family would never sit together for dinner...mainly because mom and dad would still be at work.   My grandma would cook for us but we would eat in the living room because of the TV...So bad, my grandma doesn't live with us anymore and she is now living by herself in NY...we were so ungrateful back then.  Now when I get older I realize how important family dinners are...When I have kids ...there will be no TV during dinner also!

TV off...this way we talk at the table :P We don't see each other much with everyone's busy schedule, so dinner is the only time we really catch up :)

yes, i recall big family dinners too. we still have them, but not as frequently. also, sometimes i get off work late... my brother usually gets off work late. we still try to eat dinner as a family, but not everyone is present every evening! TV is OFF, of course! =)
hahaha... hmmm. how's "the drive of life" coming along?

    what a fabulous pumkin

we sit at the table  but the telly is on in the back ground.

thanks for sharing the lovely memories of your grandpa.  In NZ beer and lemonade is called "shandy" and I used to be allowed it as a kid too.  I tasted it as an adult, eek, not as good as I remember.

God...I had the weirdest Mark Allen dream ever....not gonna even blog on it..haha

    But man..that's a HUGE pumpkin!!

The family issue of eating...this really depends. Because really we don't care what we're doing while eating. We don't really have much to say while we eat, so we get entertained by other ways. TV. Although we don't always do that. On special occasions like get togethers, all at the table. Special holidays, all at the table.

Everything else is discussed sometime else like earlier or just whenever. We see eating as something like relaxing our selves.

I've noticed that alot of restaurants in LA or dim sum places always has a TV on. But I'm sure the fish tanks catch most of everyones attention when it's a HUGE fish..lol

Usually at family dinners, everyone sits at the table.... unless the table is too small then some will go in the living room to eat.  It was a very "yeet lau" atmosphere.  At home, we all sit together for dinner and it's usually with the TV turned on.... haha.

Oh, those are such nice memories of your Grandpa.  You can never forget the happy times!  =)

Oh I hate waking up like that too.

We have dinner with my Mom at least once a week. Sometimes we eat out and when we eat in the TV is usually off except when there's a baseball game on :P

How many eps. have you watched of Drive of Life?  Are you liking it?  I'm following a Korean drama right now.

Brother hardly ever sat with the rest of the family. He went off to watch TV with his food. I would never allow TV at mealtimes.
