Honing breath-holding

In my line of work,
I used to attend many tradeshows. Well, not only attend but also get
assigned to booth duty at conventions for one of the products I managed. I'd have to
wear the requisite SHURE-brand headsets with the microphone thingy in
front of my mouth whenever I was doing demo's. The noise at these shows
is pretty loud with so many exhibitors competing for people's
attentions.
So even with my voice amplified out
of the souped-up computer speakers, I'd still have attendees sometimes
standing not 10 inches from my face or person. At times these attendees
would feel compelled to ask a question because I tended to spit out
gobbledy-gook (no, not really) that I'd be forced to turn my head to
better hear the individual's question(s).
It's most unappetizing, unnerving
and unwelcome when I get a face-ful of bad breath. These people walk
the crowded and dry convention halls and may not have a handy sip of
water to clean out their mouths, in addition to, quenching their
thirst. Or perhaps they suffered a case of halitosis.
I learned to conspicuously take in
a breath and hold it before the person started speaking. Just in case.
If I need to get a breath while the attendee is still yammering, I'd
look away as if to momentarily glance at something else, or flip my hair, quickly take
in a breath of air, and then return my attention and gaze to the
individual. Pretty slick, eh? haha.
Of course it didn't always work
well. I have a very sensitive nose and sometimes I'd get a whiff of the
halitosis. It's not pretty but I don't think anyone notices my face
turning pale or green. Everyone's so busy focusing on themselves...
