Taken from my online journal entry I keep on here.

    January 24, 2007

So all of you have read my blog on my "flirting" problem. The thing is, it's not just an online thing with me. That was just an example of him flirting with me. That's not (in italics) what I wrote to him. Heck, normally we just see girls tossing their hair around or fluttering their eye lashes...even I don't have long enough ones to do that..haha geez....I think people would be asking me if there's something in my eye..lol None the less, I've not the hair to do that with..haha it's soo short now...crappy...

But I find it hard to differientiate between a flirt or just random convo/joke/fun type of thing. Because the people whom I worked with on my group project from last semester, I met R first, then the rest of the gang. We (R and I)  always tend to talk to each other, it just happened that way. But the rest of the gang would always try to put me and R together. Why is this? Of course I'm not asking, but I've talked to one of them, she's one of Rs past co-workers, they know each other really good, well not that good, but more then me. But she sorta hinted that we're flirting with each other, that's why we're always put together or next to each other. Something or other. We're good at working with each other, we've established that in class, but studying with each other isn't a good thing. We confuse the crap out of each other....hahaha...eeekk...explains my grade for that class..haha...and yes...the Online myspace convo I had was with R.

Dude, I've never touched the guy, nor has he touched me. We just joke around, and that's all my intentions are. Sure he's kinda cute and nice and all, but still not my type. So I still really don't understand how people can preceive that as being Flirting, or that how people can just look at other people interact and say "Oh they've got it for each other, look at how cute they are together". Dude....I'm just working here.  That's all I'm doing. If you ever catch me with R, all we would be doing is our homework or a follow through some examples to understand how to do this or that.

    That's flirting? Right...give me a break...c'mon people....

You  know preception kills! I mean literally, think about it as if you were on a jury. Who's telling the truth or lying, you don't know. Only the people on the stand testifying know.

Mark Allen, if you've read his comment in my blog, he pointed out a BIG thing for me (the touching thing is a good indication of flirting). He also brought out the topic about a "Come On". What is that??? I've never done that before. Least I think not, cuz I don't even know what it is.

Anyone wanna clarify what a "come on" is?

Crap, I'm hopeless I tell ya.

Ya...okay...I admit it..I'm innocent!! I have no idea how this whole thing works out. I guess that's why my ex complained and told me to brush up on my relationship skills with his little brother. How rude...it's not like he was much of a bf either. sheez...

Why do people always get this match maker type of thing happening, when they see people can talk with each other with ease or joking without the touching, without actually standing in their personal space, like several feet away, they can't even touch you type,  etc...you get the picture.

Am I mistaken or just dumb or are other people just dumb? haha sorry... but just because we're just joking or whatever, laughing if may be. That doesn't mean a darn thing. If I really liked the guy, I'd be hinting it towards him. But nope....Heck I even told the last guy that I liked him, but nope...not gonna work out sadly. And it hasn't. I hate having to hint things, therefore I just tell people things. No hints, I don't get hints, nor do I give them out correctly..haha

Is there ever a rule of thumb for what "flirting is" so people don't start saying that "OMG She flirts with everyone! What a slut!" Ya...Absolutely hate the word slut! The girl is a victim. I for one seem to be a victim of preception.

I'm afraid that, if I find someone that I like and I "want" to flirt with him, I'm afraid I wont be able to, not because I can't, but because I'd look desperate. Ya...you heard me. Desperate. Again, another victim......

Why are women viewed to be desperate? Tossing yourself at a guy is a bit of desperation to me. But then, do you really know the whole story behind why the girl did that out in public? Maybe the guy and her has been away from each other for a REALLY long period of time. You can't blame her for showing affection towards the guy in such a manner upon first seeing the guy once again. Heck I'm sure I'd fall into being a victim of doing that too.

Some people could argue with me and say that I only see what's on the outside. But you do as well. They can go on and say they see something else and say this and that, they're so desperate and etc...but you still don't know the story behind why they're acting in such a manner, unless they're in each others pants, partially naked, etc...in public which isn't very appropriate. Or as I remember from Janes blog, that one time she saw a group of people at the bowling alley, girls and guys in the bathroom, in the same bathroom.....at the same time. Skirts so short nearly showing off her...stuff....jumping on a guy like a Koala bear..haha I remember that one. hehe that's indecent exposure and indecent behavīor. Now that's completely different.

Hmm I think I went off into tangents here...not sure..hope you guys get my point, but what is a "come on"??? So many words, any more words I should know about???

Misinterpretations of certain words and gestures can be frustrating, but what are you going to do? Watch every gesture you make or take a extra ten seconds to think about what you're going to say so that people don't perceive you as flirting? Sometimes people are just teasing you by saying you're flirting with so and so.

Of course guys can be flirts too. Intentionally and unintentionally. But we're talking Ponger here which is why I referred to the female having the problem of guys' misperception.

I agree even simple interaction can be misread. It was such a pain in the arse during school days when other people (mostly people who wanted to find something to mean about) would say so-and-so is flirting with you (or vice versa). Whatever!!

Oh and boys boo-hooing about being lead on. Oh brother!! er, unless the girl's talking on the phone w/ the guy almost daily and she says she's not interested in him nor is she leading him on. B.S. somewhere there. haha. This was not me, btw.

Wow I can't believe I missed the whole flirting blog.  A lot of good points made there.  Perception is big when it comes to online communications but I think it also plays into the real world as well.  For some reason, people seem to like to match single girls and guys who socialize together as couples.  I don't know why - heck I've done myself when I think that two people seem very compatible.  Come ons can be any comments/gestures/actions that can be construed as suggestive or innuendo in any way.

Flirting is not an necessarily a bad thing or act of desperation but girls who actually are slutty give it a bad name.

peachy's right.  but i disagree on a couple things.

first, it's not just guys misjudging a girl's "nonflirt".  sometimes a guy's charming and gentlemanly nature is misconstrued by a girl as a flirt or come-on as well.

i've been told that i lead a girl on with something i said, but whatever it was (which i can't remember) was not even remotely meant for anything romantically inclined.  i've been on the other end too, where i thought playful banter between me and a lab partner meant that she was interested.  but when i went to ask her out on a real date, she told me she only saw us as friends and nothing more.

so the second thing is that i feel flirting or flirtatious behavior is not something that must have intent but rather just is, based upon the reactions of either side.  you don't have to want to say something flirtatious for something to be perceived as flirtatious.

is it right to be called a slut because of it?  not at all.  but just be aware that it happens and people can get their feelings hurt.  don't be callous, but shrug your shoulders and move on with life.

The guestbook replies are long.  I'll read it later.

Just for the record, I didn't do it.

    good comment from Peachey... =)

hmm... socializing "correctly" is something we are constantly learning... and what I mean by "correctly" is what we define as the comfortable way of socializing with other people... some people take this to the extreme... while others are more reserved...

don't worry about what others say... although it is hard to ignore... they don't know what we are thinking internally so they can't judge or think that they know...

Come-on's are like invitations. Like "I'd understand this chapter better if I had someone to study with," and you look meaningfully at that guy as you say it. Come-ons are like little hooks for the guy to either take or ignore. Come-ons are part of flirting.

I think, at your age, you're concerned with what people say to you or think about you. It really doesn't matter in the whole scheme of things what others say or think.... If you don't feel like you're flirting, dropping hints, issuing come-ons, giggling like a sick child, then you're probably not. It does take some conscious thinking to do some of those things. Still, like we said in the other blog, some guys might misconstrue your attention to them. That sh*t happens and is unavoidable.

If you're ever worried that a guy thinks you're flirting with him or interested in him, when you're not, then it's best to make it clear to him. And this is something only the two of you need to know. Others shouldn't have to be involved. And, you know, the more you protest, the more the 3rd parties will accuse.
